(A)DSL or Cable in Carlow

Ok, some friends(around 6) and I are planning on moving into a house together and setting up a lan.

We want to go about getting broadband into the house and were wondering which would be the best option, DSL or Cable.

Firstly, I rang €ircon and they said DSL was due in carlow around march but is obviously postponed and will probably be mid june or early july.

I've heard very little about cable, only that NTL has provided it in Dublin and swiftly it has moved to Wicklow and its possible that it will be in Carlow by September.

I'll be frank, it will be mostly used for Games or downloads, but mostly games.

This means that ADSL with 512k download and 128k upload (thats Esat/€ircon's flagship products, right?) would be best suited for downloads but Cable at (an average?) of 384k upload and down, would be best for games.

Does anyone have any recommendations, suggestions or information on which route to go?

Would either be sufficient for 7 people?

    Thanks for any help.

I really wouldn't count on NTL's cable product being available beyond that street somewhere in Dublin 24. They'll tell you September but you are more than likely in for a disappointment. If you can get ESAT, that's not too bad, but a 5gb cap shared between 6 people could get a bit messy. If NetSource offered their product down there, that would be perfect. (Check www.netsource.ie?)

Yesterday I spoke to an Eircom engineer in Carlow while he was doing an ISDN install for a client. He says Eircom ADSL is definitely available in Carlow Town now but not anywhere else in Co.Carlow :(

I guess if Eircom are offering it then Netsource may be able to provide it?

Well I was talking to their help line and they said that it was intended to be in Carlow by March but has been delayed. She said that it would probably be set up any minute now.

As usual it seems that €ircons left hand doesnt know what the right one is doing (or done).

    Can anyone post links?

I'm intrigued by this VIA group...

    Ivan,

ADSL is available in Carlow since March, we have it where i work.

Secondly, there is a problem checking lines in the area so the old biddys wont know its enabled. I've ordered VIA for my home and hope to have it thursday week. Ill keep you posted on that issue.

Esat do not provide adsl in carlow (not really, they can do the RADSL product just like VIA)

Get Eircom thou... dont contend my bandwidth ...

Well at the moment it looks like Via/Netsource.

    whats the story with them?

I was told you had to be a business to get it set up?

    Details? ;)
