r_displayrefresh is what the quake3 engine uses to change the monitor refresh rate. which is how many times the monitor updates a second. it does it by linking into the windows gfx/monitor drivers, then they'll set the refresh as close to the number you put in as they can, sometimes the drivers are **** and they lock of refreshes that you can still use. so on 125 refresh 125 fps, both screen and image are updated a lot. looks all smooth, and is more in sync than 60 refresh 125 fps. so youve got more visual info, so you aim better. to get around **** drivers use powerstrip or some other monitor refresh thing.

I've yet to see r_displayrefresh working on any computer.

I`m using a GF 4 ti 4200, latest drivers, which have the built in override settings.

Most games sync to 60hz as far as i know, but i checked in game using my iiyama OSD thingy to show the refresh rate and its a lot higher than using the default refresh.

    I hate power strip tho

Well..as long as your monitor is giving a high output vHZ..you won't feckup/tire your eyes out. It's just nice and smoother to have it vsyched.

R_swapinterval 1 is in the in game command for setting vsync

Sometimes, you'll need to go to nvidia OpenGL options, and set Vertical Sync to 'On By Default'

If its q3 you're playing tho, you'll need 125fps over having vsync. i.e. Moving faster takes priority over aesthetics.

Can someone tell me what would be ideal setting would
be for the ati 9700pro card - screen res and refresh rate
with new PC and 17" screen ?

Used to use old cfg from 4 yr old PC but kept getting opengl faults - guess as I had everything set at lowest settings
I up'd some settings and it got a bit better.

used to use lowest graphics settings .. fk it here are my settings atm a work in progress btw

//My video resolution (mode 5 is 800x600) etc..
    set r_mode "5" // 6 would be highest unless v.good screen
    set r_gamma "1.60" // set high here / 1.35 is lower
    seta cg_gun "0"
    seta r_colorbits "16" // 16bit
    seta r_depthbits "16" // similar to colorbits
    seta r_detailtextures "0" // detailed textures off
seta r_displayRefresh "100" // at your highest possible for screen
seta r_picmip "6" // 0-5?6 high for worse graphics but best FPS
    seta r_fullbright "0" // on/off
    seta r_intensity "1" // no idea of range ??
    seta r_znear "4" // as above ??
    seta r_ambientScale "0.6" // as above ??
    seta r_directedScale "1" // as above ??
    seta r_primitives "0" // as above ??
    seta r_lightmap "0" // lightmap on/off
    seta r_ext_multitexture "1" // multi-texturing on - speed gain
    seta r_drawSun "1" // toggle sunlight rendering
seta r_dynamiclight "0" // dynamic lighting off - speed gain
    seta cg_shadows "0" // shadows off-on
seta r_fastsky "0" // 1 use white sky - speed gain or 0 to see through portals
seta r_flares "0" // turns off lens flare
seta r_flareSize "40" // not sure on range - not needed if off
    seta r_flareFade "7" // same as above
    seta r_showsky "0" // on/off
    seta r_noportals "0" // on/off i think ??
    seta r_texturebits 16 // 16bit textures
    seta r_textureMode "GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_NEAREST" // fastest speed
    seta r_vertexLight "1" // vertex light on/off
    seta cg_draw3ditems "0" // 3D items off
    seta r_ignorefastpath "1" // no optimized rendering paths def = 1
    seta r_simpleMipMaps "0" // on Mipmapping 0 = speed less visual
seta r_lodCurveError "250" // default 250 nbr of polys culled from a scene when further away - lower nbr for speed higher for quality
seta com_introplayed "0" // turn off sarge intro
seta r_clear "1" // 0 fills cracks between textures,1 faster but less visually pleasing
seta r_drawstrips "1" // 1 allows more sophisticated rendering of triangles.
    seta cg_truelightning "0.5" //helps with LG aim by rendering better 0 - 1 !?
    seta r_facePlaneCull "1" // no idea ??
    seta r_dlightBacks "1" // lighting ??
    seta r_ignoreGLErrors "1" // on/off
    seta r_smp "0" // no idea ??
    seta r_customaspect "1" // no idea ??

refresh rate is more important than resolution. check windows properties or test yourself to see what resolutions you can get 120 hz refresh at. if your monitor can only get 120 on 640x480, 640 is your man, no matter how fast the card can run quake 3 fps wise.

my monitor only does 75 hertz, i set display refresh to 0, dont worry about it

it has always worked for me, just don't set it higher than what your monitor is capable of, at that resolution and it should do... its a v.handy command.

latest nvidia drivers dont really support it, you have to enable the setting or use a refresh fix tool

    I can get 120 refresh on 125 fps @ 800*600

    verks for me

i think i that when u set it higher that does seem to work....i had it at 125 fps+displayrate @800x600 and the disaplay rate didn't seem to work so i put it to 200 and its seems much better
