Do all the clubs require you to be a student of the College? (specifically DCU)
it doesn't say so, but i'd say its taken for granted if its true

and if not does anyone know if DCU facilities are used for any non student martial arts clubs?

(and more importantly, if being a student IS required do they ask for student cards?)

I want to know this too...except about UCD.

well as far as the original query about DCU goes there is no problems attending the martial arts classes if you aren't a member of DCU sports complex or you aren't a student in DCU.
this has been my experience anyway.
the MA clubs hire space from DCU sports complex for say an hour or 2 and then you pay the club for the lesson.

The NUIG Kung Fu club is awesome. Small club but excelent Tuition, its part of the YMAA
    http://www.ymaa.com/
If ur interested in kung fu its your one stop resource, I highly reccomend it. They also train outside of college at st. patricks hall, on the eyre square side of college road. Kung fu is the primary art, but you may also train in Kick Boxing and Rapid arnis stick fighting. All are welcome from beginners to professionals.
Unfortunately they dont have a web site, but contact the SU sports section. Master teacher is Dave Joyce, a well known kung fu expert.

    :ninja:

In response to passive's post I have to say.. I can only comment on DIT's policy because I've never been to the other colleges.. but you have to be a student in DIT to participate in any of the clubs/societies including martial arts..

Not true, the DCU Sports and Clubs Committee (SCC) allocate money from their budget to these clubs for equipment, trips, sometimes instructor fees (although this has always been hotly contested in some quaters) and most importantly insurance.

The SCC money comes from the student capitation fee you pay at the start of the year (the 600+ fee) and it is reallocated to the SCC for the student social activities.

As such, members of the DCU sports clubs are required to be students to join with ex-students being allowed so long as they pay a higher fee (associate membership) although this will vary.
The last time it came up the SCC refused to pay insurance for non-students.

This may have changed since however.

Maybe a silly question but do you need to be a student to go to these ?

If it's on college premises, you'll usually have to be a student of the college - I wanted to go back training with the Karate club in TCD after I left, but as I'm no longer a student there I couldn't, so I joined a different club to continue my training. Sometimes college clubs train in outside sports halls, gyms, etc and if you're a member of the particular hall/gym they might let you train with them (you sometimes have to be both a student of the college and a member of the hall/gym).

The only way to be sure is to contact the club though, it's worth a quick email.

Well I know in DIT you have to be a student and show your student card to join.. but there are people there who graduated years ago and still train in the club.. so I guess that's allowed.. I wouldn't mind staying there after I graduate it's a nice club

well TKD here in NUIG, tends to require yeah to be a college student/graduate, however we can be flexible about it esp. in the case that we know the person, i think the sports centre requires a signed waver for all non-students

Does anybody know if kung fu in ucd is any good? I heard it has a long standing tradition. If no, what is good (@ucd)?

Repli, you don't have to be a student in DIT to go to judo training there, afaik.

Wow, I shoulda checked here ages ago!
I'm the chairman of the DCU Martial Arts Club. I was distressed to see you'd left us out of the list Repli :(

The Website ... http://dcumac.redbrick.dcu.ie (It needs to be updated a bit and there may be new training times in the new semester but it's pretty accurate. No training over christmas though)

We're a mixed MA club but at the moment our 2 instructors are TKD blackbelts. One of them is training in Nin Jitsu though and he's teaching a lot of grappling in his classes.

As for being a student of the college to join? No such crap with us. Non students pay a higher fee than students. It's a €10 joining fee (€4 for students) and after that you don't pay anything more. We take in non students because we get seperate insurance than that provided by the college.

If you're interested in finding out more send me a mail at
    dcumac@rebrick.dcu.ie
    or more personally,
    goaz@redbrick.dcu.ie (raz was taken :()
Send it FAO: Raz and mention that you're coming through boards and I'll be extra nice :) We always welcome new members and beginers are just as welcome as everyone else. It's a pretty informal affair so anyone will feel comfortable.

    Hi,

Just want to add a club at DCU.

The Dublin Kendo Club is based in the DCU sports complex.

    The website is at www.dublinkendo.com

just if you want to try a different martial art.

You dont think that at colledge its a bit late to be starting martial arts?

Well, with a lot of hard work and dedication, you can advance to black belt in just 3-4 years in some martial arts - so starting in college definitely isn't too late.

Obviously there are also health and fitness benefits to be gained from training in a martial art, and these apply equally at any age.

I started Judo in 3rd year in college and have being doing it for a year and a half. I wish I'd started in 1st year, but staring anytime in college definatly isn't too late. I'm a green belt now [white yellow orange green blue brown black]. Although I've only being doing it for a yeah and a half it definatly makes a difference in your defensive ability s. I am much more confident now if I find myself in a 'tricky' situation.

It's not true anymore :( The only external members we are allowed to take in are graduates of DCU. So if there are any DCU graduates who would like to come back and train with us feel free to drop along anytime.

Now that's abit of a cop out if you ask me, of course it does depend on the art, but i know of a 65 year old man who started training in TKD in cork in the last 6months (i saw him when i was down there to do prelimary grading for my 2nd dan)
I started TKD when i went into 1st year in college (age 17) i'm now a 2nd dan, i don't think the fact that i started at 17 has affected me much, then again been double jointed helps :D

nope....started kickboxing almost a year ago to the day at 21.
its turned from a hobbie to a pure addiction, always trying to kick higher, punch faster and stronger move more and more effortlessly.get as flexable as possible.even after one year there is a huge increase in my ability from last year.
a black belt would be a the ultimate reward...

A.I.T kickboxing (no site) 70 odd members.

i wanted to start a new thread on this topic but i'll see how it gets on here.

Anyone know what the story is with the JuJitsu Intervarsities in QUB in March? I couldn't find any information regarding rules etc. at the Queens Jujitsu site. I am just wondering is it like a TKD competition but you get a couple of points for knocking the dude down? Can you win my submissions? Any points for pins? Is it continious? Is the result based on points?

    HI Larrie,

They often train next to us (Taekwondo) in the squash courts. Some senior grades there - they look pretty solid.

Most of the clubs in DCU are depleting at the moment due to the hols.

    regards,
    Glenn.
