given that you had to commute to Dublin, or just didn't want to live too far from it, where in the north eastern counties would you prefer and why?

Nice one. woolymammoth pumping life back into the entire North East! :)

Hard to say.... I feel the South East corner of Meath is too congested, any where that lies on the west side of the M50 is a disaster to commute to and from.....

Louth and East Meath, you will have a motorway from the border to Collins Avenue in a few months, and a half decent rail network. +++++

Kids could end up with mid-louth accents, plus amenities are shíte...

Navan, Kells, and all Cavan have to contend with Dunshaughlin Ratoath and Trim only have to worry about Fairyhouse Cross in the morning.

    Monaghan, too far to commute.

But if I had the chance of getting work closer to home, for cost of housing, facilities and quality of life, I'd opt for Cavan.  Meath is restricting too much the one-off housing developments, and I would sooner build a house of my own than live in an estate. And also the towns of Cavan are putting resources into leisure complexes etc, which Meath simply are not.

Yes, I'm speaking up for Cavan. They maybe simple folk, but sometimes its the simple things that are the easiest to get right.

I may be biased, but yes I agree with you. Meath seems to be more worried about building large housing estates than worrying about the people's leisure. There is hardly anything in Navan, Dunshaughlan etc. for people to do.

Cavan have a number of examples of building leisure complexes as DMC said. In my hometown, Shercock, there has been a massive development for the youth of the town. They've developed a football pitch, running track and pitch all in the last three years, costing €500,000. In Bailieborough they've built a swimming pool which roughly cost the same in Kingscourt they are continuing to improve their leisure facilities (indoor soccer, gaelic pitches, boxing club etc.). In Cavan town they've built a cinema and bowling alley, there are many other leisure facilities around the town (tennis courts, swimming pool).

I know I may be biased, but I simply love living here, because there is lots to do, tbh. And alot of people from around here think the same. And also you're never too far away from the towns and cities (my house is 50 minutes (approx.) away from Blanchardstown).

Its the sign of a dormant county, PN. Everyone knows someone, in their family or next door, who commutes from Meath, making people too jaded in the evening to go out and foster a bit of community.

cavan won't lay dormant for much longer.

i may be slightly biased myself being a native, but cavan is doing pretty well at the moment with new business set to move into the town in the near future(Woodies, Argos, Super Valu), meaning you won't have to travel as far afield as Dublin for everything you want. and when you do want to, its not very far away. there's plans in the pipeline to extend the dual carriageway from the Dublin-Meath border to the Cavan-Meath border.

Like PORNAPSTER said there's a lot of developement going on. My home village, Stradone, is currently redeveloping the community centre for business and lesuire. With a brand spanking new water scheme in place for the surrounding areas, a sewage scheme to come in the next few years, it will become a very attractive place for anyone commuting to Dublin or the surrounding counties.

IMHO, if you have a car and a decent job, cavan is a prety good place to be. the only drawbacks are the nightlife which is kinda limited.

at this stage we'd like to hear from some monaghan or louth folk.
opinions people. if you're from outside the north east and were gonna be moving this direction, where would you plant yourself?

Well, where I'm situated, I'm only five to ten minutes from the Enigma, so there's your nightlife for you :D . Although, its pretty pricey €35 in some nights. I don't really mind though, because I go to the Lakeside Manor in Virginia anyway! The towns have a decent enough nightlife.

In Shercock you have McConnons and The Sail Inn which is always good fun. :D

In Bailieborough, you have the Square or the Castle. (Avoid the Bailie though)

In Kingscourt, you have the Square, and The Yard (a national gig venue).

    In Cootehill, Good Time Charlies

    In Cavan, The Imperial...

    You get the point!!

are we talkin pubs or clubs now? cos there's a few pubs you can go to. clubs on the other hand are few and far between.

the furthest i'd go out of town is The Springs in Crosskeys cos a cab anywhere else starts to burn holes in the pocket, and i don't have a car. i dunno, i guess you just get sick of lookin at the same club all the time. in cavan town you got OTO. go there, get hammered, and forget you were ever there. the imperial is over rated. the springs is ok, plus the local cab co. runs a mini bus from there to town. the nightlife does exist, its just limited.

does the oasis in carrick still do business?? anyone got anything on it? cos i've never been.

It's called the Enigma now, it plays Ministry of Sound sort of stuff. Not my cup of tea at all, but some people might like it. You can check out their website here .

if you like your unce unce unce then Enigma is your kinda place if not pretty much everywhere else would do....(except the bailie).

Alright, I'm deleting some posts because there is totally no need for them. We need a proper conversation here.

Yeah, the Sail Inn is a nice spot, I haven't been there much recently though. O'Mahoneys is very nice too if you're ever back up this far you should check it out.

There is no piggery in Shercock, at least I don't think so anyway. There is one in Carrickmacross though. :D
