And by long i mean 10mins or more (extended live songs dont count).

    Id have to go with:
Sonata Arctica - The Power of One

Great song, and its diffrent the whole way through, some great solo's throughout aswell. It also has a very good build up and intro, however there is an extended silence at the end which is a downside (ie: about 30seconds long).

    Pretty much anything by Opeth.

Probably 'Advent' and 'Forest Of October'.

Free Bird Live by Lynard Skynard would be my faveourite, but in that case
Inna Gadda Da Vida - Iron Butterfly
17 minutes of Organ Rock! Nyom Nyom!

Third rock from the sun by Hendrix is pretty long and its main melody has been used in many a song after Hendrix's death, maybe as a tribute I'm not sure.

    Nobody Girl by Ryan Adams

    Tool - H
    Iron maiden - 7th son of a 7th son
Metallica - master of puppets (9 mins i think)

I'd hazard a guess at... one?

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - "Sleep"
    Tool - "Eye"
    Weird Al - "Albuquerque"

Yea Nofx's "Decline" is damn good too.

    Just the 1 song, Gordon.

I most heartily reconmend it, it's the most amazing thing you could possibly hear. If you look at the musicians involved in the booklet, it takes up 2 pages! They have 2 Choirs, a childrens and opera! About 5 different vocalists, and enough additional musicians to make up an orchestra, along with Saxaphones and everything...

    Completely unbeleivable...

GNR - Coma.. Just Cool :>

Pink Floyd - Echoes/Shine On or Free Bird by L.S. would be my choices..

I know you didn't want live songs but Jeff Buckleys live version of Kanga-Roo is bloody amazing as well.. drummer and guitarist just go at it for 5 minutes or so and work up to such a climax :)

    Lynyrd Skynrd - Freebird.

The edit I have clocks in at 9:05 but feels about 0:18.

Honourable Mention : Mogwai - My Father My King (20:12)

Deep Purple Space Trucking BBC Live 1972
    Pink Floyd Shine On...pt 2

from the cradle to the grave- subhumans

17 and half mins of sheer excellence!!!!:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

Iron Maiden- Rime Of The Ancient Mariner.

It's nearly 15 minutes long. I like it.

Although it doesn't "count", some of the AC/DC live sets can go on for ages , and they're bloody brilliant...

bohemian rhapsody - queen or smells like teen spirit but that wouldn't be that long but it IS Nirvana so it deserves a mention

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 253 ✭✭ratman

how did you manage to work nirvana into this thread

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,208 ✭✭✭loismustdie

i said why, because it's nirvana! and it's kind of long? anyway it's nirvana and i just said it because i knew you were on this site and that it'd annoy you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

But Nirvana are cr*p, so they have no relivence in anyway shape or form to the thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭Dun

I know there was absolutely no need to bring Nirvana into this thread - I'm guessing their longest song is nowhere near ten minutes, but please no more {Nirvana are crap/no they're not/yes they are/no they're not/yes they are/no they're not} "discussions". Not like there's not a ton of them round already..

Anyway, I do like a lot of songs that clock in at almost the ten minute mark, G'n'R - Coma, Metallica - Orion, to name a couple but the only one I can think of at the moment that does go over is Zeppelin's Achille's Last Stand.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Kurdt

dream theater - a change of seasons (25mins)

i reckon the longest nirvana song is about 7 minutes (either of the 'secret tracks' from nevermind & in utero)

iron maiden - the phantom of the opera (almosst ten mins)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Right, if you want to drag this into a Nirvana debate, I'm going to lock the thread and ban everyone involved for the night. Stay on topic or get the hell out!

Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamonds

Is orion longer than 10 ins, that aswell so

i know it's been said already but the decline by NOFX is seriously the best long song i ever heard...

Yeah Coma is cool because there's never any repeating of verses , and theres no chorus.
And the singing at the end is class.
Rocket Queen is about 6 mins at most, maybe shorter, it just seems long because of the big change in the middle.

    Tool - Flood
    Opeth - The Moor
    Opeth - Advent
    Opeth - Forest of October

Brighton Rock (live or studio version), Bohemian Rhapsody and Innuendo from Queen.

I'll think of more later methinks.
