    Honestly, who comes up with this stuff?
    It worked and all, and it's certainly clever, but still!

    Let me dispell the magic and show you the ugly maths.
    First of all, pick the number
    Let this be x
    Multiply this number by 2
    2x
    Add 5
    2x+5
    Multiply it by 50
    50(2x+5)
    If you haven't (had your birthday this year), add 1752
    50(2x+5) + 1752

    => 100x + 250 + 1752
    => 100x + 2002 <-- quite convenient
    Now subtract the four digit year that you were born
    => 100x + 2002 - 1984
    => 100x + 18 <-- oh look my age

    So if your original number (x) was 3...

    100(3) + 18 = 318

    Rather elementary my dear Watson. I cant see why the guy in the email was so excited.
    THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2003) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS.

    yep, my point exactly.

    "that maths thingy originated on the net "

    its been around before the net, thats the point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭Thorbar

    Granted the math's trick may have been around before the net but this particular incaration appears to have been emailed around (note the server >>> indicating its been forwarded) and then it was posted on to a web page. I think its safe to say that it originated on the net, and that anyone who moans about having seen it already is a dick-fiend.

    exactly ! *shakes fist* I want to get rid off all the dick fiends in ireland....just like jesus got rid of all the snakes...:rolleyes:

    So does your add 2 subtract 2 trick work every year or just in 2003? :)

    very cool but how about this one...

    Think of a number, any number.
    Now if every letter of the alphabet was a number - a=1 b=2 c=3 etc etc.
    Add the number of your name (don't forget your middle names and exclude any hyphens etc) ie add every letter up. if you were called abc you would be 1+2+3 = emm... 6.

    Now you have your name number do this...
    Subtract the original number that has been divided by 2.

    Therefore - take that number (divided by two) away from the sum total of your name.

    Now with this number you have what is known as "The platinum share". this "platinum share" is very special because it can either be divided by the sum total number of your dream partner's name or it can be subtracted from your sense of humour.

    So aren't you amazed?

    No, the point is that this particular incarnation is nearly identical to the incarnation i was shown on a piece of paper in Mr Walshs irish class in 1st year (and there was no feckin internet then bejesus - well there was, but there was no pr0n so noone had it).

    So it didnt 'originate' on the net.

    And the OMG THIS SI TEH ONLY YEAR IT WILL WORK is even more annoying :)

    let me guess, if you dont pass it onto 20 different people in the next 5 minutes, both your legs will fall off as well?

    jesus, if a bit of simple maths impress you lot, then i'm really surprised you manage to walk down the street on your own without supervision.
