win xp modem problom

    im starting to hate everything that is win xp.

    when setting up a new internet connection it dosnt allow the option to connect to the net any other way apart from a broadband connection it has shaded out the other 2 ways of connecting . im lost i dont know whats wrong with ti . think win xp has failed to load part of the computer os but i want a way to fix it without reinstalling the entire thing ??

    Can you see the modem in device manager? Does it have an '!' or an 'x' beside it?

    This is a known issue, Elexes.

    I encountered the same problem myself.

    According to MS - there's two options to repair this. For the sake of convenience , here's the URL:

    If you're like me, you'll probably have to take option 2 and do an "In place upgrade".

    Also seen this happen if you cancel the dialling properties for your modem when you start the connection wizard, i.e the bit where you put in your area code, tone/pulse dialling etc.

    Fwiw, mine went again - and neither method worked - I had to reformat the partition and reinstall. :(
