    Hi,

I'm trying to share an internet connection across a network. This "network" is simply a PC and a laptop.
The PC has the dial up modem to the internet.

I wish to manually set up my machines with IP addresses and net sharing. Networking is working fine and both machines can see each other and share files etc.

I have set up the machines as follows:

In my settings -> network connections -> LAN -> properties

    PC (with modem):
    * use the following IP address:
    IP address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: blank

    * Use the following DNS server addreses:
    Preferred DNS server: blank
    Alternate DNS server: blank

PC Internet Dialup Properties -> Advanced
    * Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection
    * Allow other network users to control or disable the shared internet connection

    Laptop:
    * use the following IP address:
    IP address: 192.168.0.196
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

    * I'm assuming the Default Gateway uses my PC's address to access the net.

    * Use the following DNS server addreses:
    Preferred DNS server: blank
    Alternate DNS server: blank

Internet Gateway on <PCNAME> exists in my Network Connections. I can dial up and connect but I can't go anywhere when connected. Works fine on the PC.

ie if I ping google on the laptop I get:

ping request could not find host www.google.ie. Please check the name and try again.

What could I be doing wrong? I hate the way microsoft try to hide everything and suggest to set up everything automatic. :(

Do I need to set up Preferred DNS server ips on my PC perhaps?

    further information:

I can't ping www.google.ie on the laptop but I can ping it's ip address: 216.239.53.99 or type the .ip address into the browser.

    hey,

type "ipconfig /all" on laptop and pc and show us

im thinking an ipconfig /release and then a reboot on the laptop could stir something, although it is late and i am drunk so bear with :P

Hey thx for listening! Hope you had a good nite!

    okay, ipconfig /all gives....

    Windows IP Configuration

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Beastie
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Mixed
    IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
    WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : 3Com 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet
    Controller (3C905C-TX Compatible)
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0B-DB-14-CA-86
    Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.196
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

I manually set my IP to be: 192.168.0.196
I put the gateway as: 192.168.0.1 (which is my PC with modem)
I just tried putting in a DNS Server: 192.168.0.1 (my pc again)
    No luck either.

Now, if I let windows assign it automatically it works but I want to keep a specific IP address (not a new one everytime I connect the laptop. Grr!).

    Any good?

DNS is the problem alright. Setting the gateway as the DNS server worked for me on the pc's I left with static IP's. Failing that, use the IP of the actual ISP's DNS server. Just run ifconfig on the gateway machine, get the ip from it for the DNS server and stick it in the client pc.

the easiest way to share the connection is with 3rd party software. You can also do it by setting up routes.

    This might help.

I disagree. Windows Internet connection sharing is perfectly adequate for connecting a small lan and takes all of five minutes to setup.

Personally I don't like it as it relies on dynamic IPs. Some versions do not even come with it as standard, so in my opinion to keep everything on the same level (simplier) a hardware or a software solution is generally more stable. I found updating windows in any way with patches, required a re-setup of ICS.

True, I haven't tried it on Win98, but on win200/XP haven't had any issues with it at all. Also have had no problems with static ip's as below. For someone with only two pc's I see getting specific hardware as slightly excessive.
