Ireland OFFline: Best ISP Annual award scheme?..

As it now looks as though I will be - vanishing off - again this weekend. Just another suggestion for ALL to consider and perhaps announce publicly.

As Ireland OFFline has now become nationally known and is not only talked about by members. Would the Committee please consider awarding an Annual *Best Internet Service Provider of the Year Award?.

The Founders and members of long standing could I am sure work out the judging procedure/method.

This would I believe create a climate of competition resulting in more publicity for IOFFL while keeping current ISPs on their toes and looking over their shoulders, while Internet all users benefit.

Just a suggestion, and pro or anti idea comments are very welcome?..

Good luck to you all for now.

    Paddy20.;)

Now that sounds like a very clever idea.

I for one dont give a flying feic who pc-live,pc-gamer-pc whatever-or even ioffl thinks is the best isp out there.so why would anybody else. if your a gamer you needs are different, if your a wok user your needs are different, if your a company your needs are different, if your on a budget your needs are different. whats the point is some block telling you xyz are the best and not matter what you do they will always be the best. about the only thing we can agree on is who is the worst.

I can see the benefits of this.

Certainly under the "listening to their customers" category... ;)

Why would other people. Well other people would care about it because they understand things like Public Relations, advertising and publicity.

If IOFFL had some awards, or some kidn of acredditation it would be a little bit of credibility within the community, and mostly outside the community.

It would have to be done well though, but I think the idea has definate promise.

It sounds like a good idea although I don't know if it's normal within the framework of a pressure or lobby group.

Since this group is most representative of SME's and residential users (if not totally exclusively) then the list of ISPs should only be cut by those parameters.

Why not rate each, award the overall best and award in sub-categories of best gaming / tele-working / SME / budget - residential / most features etc...

If an award system like this isn't compatible with the aims of this group then maybe a more comparative system - rating each irish isp, scoring them comparatively to foreign ISPs for their features etc... (sort of say eircom scores 25.5 to BT's 65.9 ... to give people an idea of quality).

    Great idea lads
I think the sub catagory idea will work well
and i have seen it on other (uk) sites in the past.

I've also seen a kind of comparison table
where users post in the speed they are getting
    for DSL.

Maybe someone honest in here could
write a prog that logs the average speed/ pings in a month
and at the end of that month presents a text file
that the user can choose to email in to us and
we post the results on the site...

and what happens when ioffl is accused of being nothing but an esat/eircom/utv/ntl/ect lapdog. Usually the isp's and/or other companies that win these things pay for them. what happens to ioffls creditability when they start saying x is better then y, and z is just super

You can give awards and reccommendations without losing credibility. That's what most industry watchdogs do. It's their credibility that makes the award worthwhile.

ARe we a watchdog? i thought ioffl was a lobby group and as such shouldn't so preverance for any isp. You know the make they can twist things.

    Boston,

Re:- " Are we a watchdog?"

Can I refer you to the thread:- The Future for Ireland - on this page. You may find my reply on that thread enlightening, but if not thats democracy in action.

    Best wishes,

    Paddy20,;)
