New Kernel

I decided to try upgrading to 2.4-20 from the redhat8 default2.4-18 or 14.
    Did the usual
    make clean
    make xconfig
    make dep
    make modules
    make modules_install

i also tried copying the image out manually.
    updated grub

When i restart i get a message somewhere along the lines of :
Kernel panic !! unable to load filesystem on 0,0

0,0 i assume is the HD partition, its the same in grub as the entry for the working kernal so im assuming the message is slightly wrong or else its a problem with the initrd file.

I went thru this a few times to make sure it wasnt something i was doing wrong in xconfig, but as far as i can see its ok.

Any ideas, i know its something simple.

*edited cos i keep spelling kernel as kernal.

Did you compile etx2 and ext3 (if using it) into the kernel and NOT as a module??
