What's it like anyway ? Is it better than using Windows ?

A friend of mine was talking about it and half recommended it as an alternative to Windows

I heard mandrake linux is the best one ? not sure as there's so many

Linux is great, when you get it working.

It's not that it’s hard to install, but there's definitely a learning curve when it comes to actually making things work the way you want.

But if you're up for the challenge then it's a great OS.

Personally, I've yet to find the time.

oh yea... I've got Mandrake 9.1 on here - I heard it was the best as well - although it doesn’t like my modem, so it doesn't get much use.

I run Mandrake 8.1 and yes - it is good and about as user friendly as Linux can be. But if you are more of a techy type, Suse Linux and Red Hat offer more techy stuff.

Red Hat is not that complicated for a new user. Almost everyting is set up from the word go .
You should avoid Debian as it's pretty hard to configure if you dont know what you are doing, but is easier these days then it used to be

The ultimate techy Linux is Gentoo (www.gentoo.com). You essentially tailor it to your specific system....

FYI: There's a good comparison of the various Linux's in this months PC World if you're interested in comparing the pro's and con's.

That doesn't sound right at all

    1. Download ISOs
    2. Burn ISOs
    3. Boot PC from disk1
    4. Follow on screen instructions

There's also a tool to check that the disks contain the correct packages etc

You can get it from here too! You can also get debian which is my flavour of choice.

    ftp://ftp.esat.net/mirrors/ftp.redhat.com/redhat/linux/9/en/iso/i386/

Whoot - i downloaded all 5 ISO's from HEANet @ 840KB+/sec(yes bytes!). Sure beats the 2MBit the entire college had when i was in first year:)

    screen grab

does anybody know of any other good HTTP mirrors for this? the college campus, in all their wisdom blocking P2P, managed to block everything FTP aswell...

If you're in College and aren't able to use FTP, you might as well grab it from the Heanet's server considering you're using their network anyway:

    http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/9/en/iso/i386/

    cheers lads.

on a side note, from your experience, what else should i have for linux? i've never used it before and i was just wondering are there any other apps or add ons i should have, might want.

only reason i'm asking is that i'll be home for the summer and without any internet connection.

    thanks.

Linux Distributions come packaged with thousands of useful (*and useless) applications to suit most people. Unless theres some specific thing you need then you'll probably survive fine.

If I were stuck without a net connection for an extended period the main thing I'd grab is manuals/guides. Theres usually plenty of info with most packages but a visit to sites such as http://www.tldp.org (The Linux Documentation Project) would give you some useful guides.

Installing RH9 from scratch has to of been the least painful install I have ever done of Linux ever.

Everything just worked as it should. Even installing the extra bits (eg. Flash, Wine,Eclipse) was pretty easy and anyone who is good at windows would have no problems.

Patching didn't require a reboot. (Bought the support from RedHat).

It was even a quicker and less painful install then say W2K (which required multiple boots and multiple patching).

I'm very impressed with it. I can see it becoming an every day desktop type OS the more people that see it.

    Cool.

What an excellent stick, with which to beat the Windows trolls with.

LOL :) Why need to beat them, isn't paying $400 for an operating system punishment enough?

Btw, so far two people who have looked at my laptop have moved over to RH9. There is nothing on Windows (for work stuff) that RH9 doesn't have. One of them was a bit apprehensive because he uses 'Total Commander' all the time. So I downloaded it and ran the windows installer and the it installed and ran fine. After that he was sold on it too.
