Just received this lovely letter from eircon today.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR INTERNET ACCOUNT

    Dear Mr. ******

The eircom hi-speed team has received the following information which is relevant to ISDN and eircom hi-speed customers who also use eircom net as their Internet Service Provider.

As part of its network expansion and enhancement programme, eircom net is changing the dial-up number for “free” Internet access. One of the benefits of this change is that freeserv account holders will now be able to connect to the internet at speeds of up to 128kps.

If you use an eircom net freeserv account over an ISDN or eircom hi-speed line, please ensure your modem is correctly configured to achieve the speeds you want.

Changing your modem settings is easy –-- it only takes about 10 seconds, and should not cause any harm to your computer or ISDN / eircom hi-speed line.

You should check your e-mail account for a message from eircom net that indicates instructions on how to change your dial-up settings. Please follow these instructions carefully. If you have not yet received this e-mail, it should arrive in the next couple of days.

For further information please visit www.eircom.net/1892. If you have any further queries or require assistance making the change please contact eircom net on freephone1800 251 151 or by email at 1892support@eircom.net

    Yours,

    Gayle Rockman.

Ok so where is the catch? If you set your ISDN modem to 128kbps does it not still tie up both your lines and cost you twice the price? Or is it possible to have 128kbps access on a single line? Quite honestly I cba to even look it up but just wondered if anyone else actually did and what was the outcome.

its impossible to have 128k on 1 line, its the basis of how isdn works, 2 lines bundled together will give u 128k speeds but tie up both ur lines and cost you twice as much.....

isnt it strange how they dont mention that... :;rolleyes;:

Thats just referring to the fact that the old non-subscriber number could only do 64k max, the new one can do 128k, costs
    twice as much still.

Is this not a bit shifty on eircom's part? If they recommend doing this on your phoneline and don't anywhere mention that it will cost twice as much is there not some question as to the validity of then charging twice as much? If nothing else it sounds like very sharp practises

They're not recommending you connect at 128, they're just saying you can. All the other 'free' isps have been offering 128 access for ages now, they all say similar things.
