Right. My homeplace is Thurles Co. Tipperary. Until recently I lived in Maynooth Co Kildare and commuted to work in Dublin. NOW! If i was to get a return ticket from Maynooth into Grand Canal Dock it cost me €4.50. It is an hourlong journey. If I wanted to go home to Thurles it costs me €33 return. It takes an hour and a half. What in the name of christ is that about! By the way a single to Thurles is €24 and a Single to Maynooth is €2.50. What justification is there in that!? I know they want to keep Maynooth cheap as it is a commuter town but jesus I'd say they get well over a hundred people on that train to Thurles every journey. It could not cost €3000 to get the piece of sh1t to thurles!

Quite simply the difference between Intercity and commuter rail services. Exactly the same can be found in plenty of other places around the world.

Commuter lines never charge full economic fares. See old episodes of Yes Minister (the one where Hacker gets made Transport Supremo) for details and perhaps even a few laughs. Or as embraer said, it's the same in the real world. Silly? Just a little - one group is subsidising the other group.
