    I've heard that it's possible to get speeds above 512k even if you've only signed on for a 512k service depending on the contention ratio/distance from exchange etc on Eircom lines (and through that Via). Can anyone tell me if theres any truth in this?

    completely not true, unless the isp specifically says burstable. You will most likely be luckly to get your 512k. You dont tend to get this thing on DSL services more often its a wireless or cable services. that said i know people who pay allot of money for sdsl or hdsl lines in the states and get this type of effect.

    All that said, during the eircom adsl tries afew people i know using the residental service where upper to the 1mb srevice for short periods without warning, but that was according to eircoms software so its jsut as likely the software was feiced.

    Esat(as an example) provide bandwidth it steps of 2mbs so you might think this means if less then four people use the service(contention wont come into paly here) that your speed will be upped, not the way it works, the isp will stop this.

    Odd, thats what the Eircom sales rep told me, well she didn't say I could reach one meg per se, just that depeneding on the distance from the exchange I could expect speeds of over 512k.
    I know someone in England who pays for a 512k service but seems to reach 1mb speeds most of the time.

    O i'm sorry, take the eircom reps word for it over mine, im sure they know more about it then i do, after all they are so well trained. I know people in ireland who pay for a 512k service and get 600k, their on ntl cable, whats you point? i doubt your "little freind" has bt dsl.

    Whats that meant to mean? He has Nildram. I thought BT were meant to be far better these days ahoo.
    Look, I have nothing against you but I tend to believe what comes from the horses mouth more than hear say.

    then you an idiot, and why the hell did you even bother to ask if you hand allready made up your mine. Eircom will tell you that i -stream is sex on wheels if they think it will get you on their service. I've more experience dealing with this shower then you, i know the **** they tell impressionable young boys to convince them to buy their service. Believe what you want you tawt, i've actually had the service unlike you and most likely unlike the person you spoke to. Don't acks questions if all you want is a yes reply. Btw i'm slow to believe anythign your "little english buddy" says to you with out proof to back it up.

    Calm down lads now!
    or this is going in to the bin.

    Boston is right about the speed
    the ADSL that eircom/esat sell is fixed max speed. (1mb/512)
    the cheaper RDSL will be rates from 256K to 512K depending on the distance from the exchange to your house over the length of copper.
    as for the 600K NTL. ntl Ireland upped the dl speed months back to match the UK but did not bother telling any one.

    you can change your dl speed with most cable broadband (you will get in troble if your isp finds out) with some reg hacks.
    but with adsl it's set at the DSLAM (in the exchange)
    which will be set by your ISP/Phone company to what ever you pay them or with RDSL what ever is the max speed your isp lets and your line will take. (With Eircom RDSL = 512K max)

    do not listen to the biddies in Eircom help they know as much about adsl as my 96 year old grandmother

    best way to see what speed you can get is download some thing from
    Microsoft.com
    1mb = 115K-120K max a sec
    512K = 55K-60K a sec
    256K = 30K a sec dl
