hi. i replied to a thread last week asking about how i can join in. i logged onto the server as explained on wednesday and followed the directions - into the magic shop, down the stairs and round a few corners. however, i was told the server had timed out.

there was no one on the player list even though i think i was there at the right time. flashbang did appear for a second but then disappeared.

were you guys around wednesday or did i do something wrong (i'm a bit of a noob here)? now didn't have any haks downloaded but didn't think i'd need any.

would love to play monday but won't be able to join til about 9. is that too late? do you play on tues and lastly, can i be levelled up to some useful level? it'd make it a lot more fun if i was somewhere near the rest of you guys.

    thanks, cya!

We were there at that time. There was a hak needed but itwas the same one used on the monday, so if you were there for the first Giants scenario (dont think you were but not sure) then you did not need one.. otherwise yes you did.

On monday... if you are late.. thats fine! Or should be, usually is fine but when you join in let us know and we can invite to party.. might be a good idea BEFORE you start talking to NPC's as you might mess things up if you do. Yes you can be levelled up to the average we are on. Ask Lolth (Valen in the game).

if you have probs and see someone join, immediately shout something so the person stays. Most of us just join and run down to the portal if they're late and don't even look if other players are on server. So, if you have probs getting through portal and see someone join, immediately ask him to help you before he reaches the server-portal. Otherwise he or she is (obviously) gone.

thanks guys. i'm gonna try show up 2moro night so. will i have to have a hak installed? LoLth said there wouldn't be any needed but i haven't got any of the previous ones installed so it might not apply to me.

btw what character class is recommended, i wouldn't mind trying out a magic based char. unless i should be starting out as a fighter........

well, I'm a wizard... pretty much THE "magic based char" together with the sorc... and lets face it: I'm pretty useless for the party!
I'd advice you to go fighter/barbarian/cleric (heh, can't have too many clerics :)) or maybe rogue. As a sorc/wiz you'll have a hard time playing as:

    1. with lots of CQB-specialists, most enemies are dead before you even finished casting your spell
    2. the party won't stop if a large group of enemies is spotted so you can throw in a fireball/lightning bolt/chain-lightning/whatever and throwing such a spell of mass-destruction on a group of enemies with friendlies mixed in between is not really an option (at least for a normal european)
    3. many modules have pretty strict rest-restrictions. And even if they don't you will always fall behind the party if you decide to rest to refresh your spells as you can't expect everyone to wait for you. Sometimes it's even necessary to leave the party and move to another area to rest because any combat will result in an interruption of your rest-cycle. Even if it's just one party-member beating the **** out of another ;) (thou it's fun to stay and watch :D)

if you still think you want to be a spellcaster: be my guest. I can set you up with the basics. Sorc and wiz are my main classes so I should be able to answer you pretty much every question. You can even gain some CQB-capabilities if you know what you're doing (as in for a spellcaster lots of HP and acceptable CQB-damage).

When i first started out i played Sorc! Saruman of course :D
Very hard in the beginning but eventually i bacame pretty powerful.. its hard starting out as a mage but gets easier.. and as long as there are some fighters around you will be fine. We have a wiz, i prefer Sorc myself though so why not go with a sorc.
At the moment im Cerano the Battle Cleric so dont worry if you are killed.. i can raise you as long as im alive :D

Oh and no you dont need a hak for monday, i think you will for Wednesday and its pretty big too!

Well, no HAK needed in this case means just that. All custom stuff is handled by the module which is stored on the server.

Hak files are only needed when custom models, rules additions, custom graphics and other major changes to the game are used. These files are unfortunately not usually re-usable (for example, even though I already had the winter tileset downloaded I still needed the full HAK for against the giants... ie. I doubled up on 8mbs of download overall).

Unfortunately, lately as scenarios get more and more customised, the hak files are getting larger. which makes last minute patching almost impossible.

Monday would be a good game for you to join in as it will be a short enough scenario and hopefully fairly straight forward.

There'll be no problems levelling you up, just remind me when you join (or Rev). Me = Valen in the campaign.

    As for character class.

If you are new to NWN, I would suggest going for a fighter. I f you are new to multiplayer but know NWN quite well or if you are a PnP player, we could really use a decent level thief. my character is only a 3rd level thief, and while that does for the minor and default NWN traps and locks, if we come across custom DC settings (which we are starting to meet more and more now) I just cant see or disarm them.

I think the lowest level in the group is 11th at the moment, so thats what you would be coming in as. You'll get a bit of cash to buy equipment (not a huge amount). Anything else will have to be begged borrowed or beaten out of you team mates :)

I'll try to show up tonight but we have a forest-fire here. Five or six fire departments already went out and a few squad-cars and a couple of ambulances. Dunno if they'll call up the THW, but it's quite probable as we're the technical division of the disaster relief organization structure (the lads that lift train-engines and -wagons at sites of train-accidents for example).

So, if I don't show up tonight, it's not cause I don't like you anymore :p
thou I kinda hope they won't call me up as I was looking forward to this module :/

    well, time will tell

this isnt the party killer module.

It is a different classic conversion. I was out for the count with a flu for a few days so I didnt get to post the link to the hak file for the "killer" module. playing this one tonight gives people time to get the Hak for wednesday (the link to the hak is the HERE word in the first post by the way, just in case people didnt see that).

However, I have an assurance from the author that this module had been "altered" enough from the original PnP modue to provide a decent challenge to a 10th to 13th level group.

ps. you also have to buy ROPE! seemingly a section cannot be completed without it.:ninja:

and yes, the ninja smiley is only in there because I never noticed that one on the list before and I wanted to use it.

quarryman, if you go rogue, I found a VERY nice rogue-armor last module (gg by the way!). As I was overloaded, I passed it on to lolth who promised not to sell it. So, if you decide to go rogue, grab that armor from lolth and I'll set you up with some basic rogue-equipment. Dang, if I knew that, I would've kept that +2 x-bow and the protection-gear I bought... ah well, I think someone found a ring of prot +2 so I guess we can set you up there, too.

on another note: why is it such a big thing to download that 15mb hak-pack? how many of you don't have broadband?

If you dont go rogue i have other sets of armour in my bag of holding for you.. +2 chainmail and +2 full plate too.. as well as one or 2 others..

I lost my nice halbeard  However i had a Flaming sword ready for when i turned level 13... so near the end of the mod i got to use it... For those that did not know.. I had all the quest weapons.. i gave to Nela who was friendly to the lord K, anyway once we got the money and xp and mod was over, i walked right up and let the guards and lord K attack me.. i killed them and i got 2 of the weapons back from him. The halbeard was not there but i got the hammer and the sword.. Sword being the coolest i think. Probably worth nothing since they are quest items... and so high level we might never get to use but maybe worth something.. we shall see

oh yeah, that's another thing: do we really always have to wreak havoc among the civies and friendlies in a city? I mean... can't we just let them live?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 10,339 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoLth

it was a decent scenario last night. A good mix of combat, puzzles and traps. I loved that teleport room :)

hehe, rust monsters :) See the big brave tanks squeel in fear and wish they had haste so they could run away faster! :p

Those and green slime have to be two of the most fear inspiring creatures in DnD (well, green slime got screwed over in 3rd ed., now it just does damage, before it used to turn the victim into green slime in 1d4 rounds :) ). ooh, and rot grubs, they're pretty tasty too (we met them in the Dunwater scenario)

I got me a nice monk belt too so any rogue that joins the party can have my rogue helmet (immune to poison and knockdown and bonuses to thief skills).

oh yeah, I also won the punch up with an axe wielding dwarf :) but I lost the rematch when he got cross because he couldnt find me as I sneak attacked him repeatedly with arrows from hiding hehe. take it stumpy!

Remember, you will need the HAK for wednesdays game.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 10,339 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoLth

well, the civvies were friendly to me when we left. When I got back, they attacked me (2 guards) the first guard was killed before I could run away. the second got it when Heb arrived.

then the killing spree started. I lost 9 points off the good-o-meter :(.

anyway, we couldnt have completed the bruno quest for the serriff. We didnt get the necklace off Bruno's body (he was the fighter with the glowing mace that kicked us about repeatedly. Not a nice man indeed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

yeah the civies thing was odd... i did nothing to them before i started the quest.. no one did.. well eh with the exception of trying to opek hokars chest, his guards and he attacked me (very tough). I had to kill them in the end to get down to where you were. But none of the other civies minded that.. but when we completed the main quest then most of us or half at least were not much liked.. odd...

seems like the town was still chaps with cheese, raggy (who's he on the board?) and me. Indeed, strange stuff... *shrug*
ok, idea for next time: if ppl in the city don't like you: stay out of the city till the ppl that are still liked completed the quests and creamed up the rewards for the party :) THEN wax the population and burn the city to the ground :D

right. sorry, i never made it last night. the internet was tied up etc etc. read all your posts - thanks for the very big welcome. was thinking myself that a rogue would be a great character to play but was doubtful whether a thief would have much impact in a multiplayer game (he obviously does).

So, yup, i'd love to try that class. Its a great class to try a bit of everything in. I think i played a thief in Baldur's Gate and possibly Planescape Torment, though PS:T was a lot less stringent on char type. Sooo i'm gonna try get the hack for 2moro but no guarantees.

    cya!

btw gonna go online now to see if anyone's about and to get a feel for the setup......
