Well, I must say I was absolutely shocked today. :)

Myself, my mum, dad and auntie went shopping in liffey valley today, all's good and well... until we get home.

Open the back door to see smoke coming from the corner, over beside the sink....

    burn1.jpg

Seems that lovely lovely glass paperweight thing had done the whole acting as a magnifying glass and set the magazine on fire (the picture was taken after we'd put it out obviously....). See the bloody burn on the wood work too.

Freaky, and a good thing we got home when we did.

I think we'll be moving the glass paperweights out of the window from now on....

Wow that's mad Fio! Didn't think it was *that* sunny in Dublin either. You're lucky you got home before the fire caught. I wonder would insurers call that an "act of God" :0)

I'd say the glass weight on the right told the other one to do it.

Lucky. I remember years ago when a room in our house caught fire, my brother left an old stero playing and it went up. We all got out but that one room was completely ****ed, the whole house was wrecked with smoke damage. The plastic in the smoke from the stero/tv etc going around the house sticking to all the walls did the most damage. Its weird, i just remember being woken and told to get out and then being out side looking at the front door. Loads of black smoke pouring out but i honestly don't remember having trouble finding my way out or even coughing. Weird.

Lucky the dog in the room it started in, started barking waking up my brother and so forth. Fire bigade put it out before it spread to any of the other rooms.

    [EDIT]

Also, not so long ago we had a neighbour of ours felt the roof on our shed. As he was doing so the flame from his torch went through one of the cracks in between the boards and caught onto a box full of foam packaging, which went up into flames seriously quick :)

Shed burnt down completely, along with the bikes and grass :)

Its these kinds of things that make us appreciate life a little more eh.

That happened to an ex of mine - it focused a beam onto a hairspray container and exploded in the room destroying much stuff there but not burning it down.

Very important for people with Crystal Balls in their houses to make sure they are nowhere near light. *cough*thaed*cough*! In fact many glass objects can have a similar effect. Be careful about what you put on your windowsill!

I remember years n years ago, our freezer went on fire! There was black muck and soot everywhere, the stink was rotten but nothing went up in flames for some reason. Even the cheap ass wallpaper didnt burn. Weird and very lucky.

    Lucky Fio!

Off-topic and such but I remember a few years ago on my younger brothers birthday. He was blowing out his candles or something and his hair went on fire! Ah it was funny :)

You're lucky it only smouldered and didn't catch!!

I can remember years ago, the gobsh1te I was going out with put chicken burgers on the grill, went into the living room and fell asleep on the couch. Needless to say, the burgers went up.

It burned the rubber strip off the cooker (the one that cushions the grill door when it shuts) and filled the place with smoke. When he finally woke up and opened the doors and windows, traffic on the street was slowing down the smoke was so bad! I tell you, we didn't get rid of the smell of burning for a week. I could hardly sleep - I'd wake up at 3am with the smell of charred things in my nose and I'd get this adrenalin belt where my sub conscious was shouting "fire! fire!"

(and my conscious shouting "f*ckwit! f*ckwit!")
