    Anyone have this problem :
both WinQuake and QuakeWorld crash regurarly when I quit out.
The machine freezes with a black screen and a fuzzy line a centemeter
below the top of screen. Nothin works, "ctrl+alt+del", tabbing nothin!
Would love to solve this cos I gotta dial into my isp again and again.

I get this same problem. It's some display driver thing. I've tried everything I know how to fix it... can't. Although, in mine, it quits out, returns to the desktop normally, then blinks into a blank screen and stays like that. I've found that if, during the brief moment when the desktop is normal, I create some animation on the desktop , it doesn't do a second screen-refresh and it's OK! Also, windowing QW before exiting helps as well. So I find. I hope that's of some help.

    Thinker.

    I have it too.

I find if you type vid_mode 0 and then quit
    it's fine.

Same here and i recon it happens a lot to almost everyone.. Well as one person said it might be our Cheap PII 333 machines or just maby our 3d fx cards or just some drivers. But like you ide like to know the answer to it too.
