Bios is reporting cpu temp at 97 degrees and rising! case stays at at 27.
    cpu type p4 2.4
Heatsink and fan(came with cpu) and thermal paste all applied.
Anyone explain this? I really don't fancy frying it

Check that it is properly seated etc, your mobo manufacturer may have a Utility for Monitoring CPU temps etc, google it.

It was sitting correctly afaik. The clips all clicked into place. The black retangle on the bottom of the heatsink has also curled slightly at the edges. I'll try and get my poxy webcam working tomorrow.

is the clip on the right way on the heatsink?
is the HS sitting squarely on the chip?
    possibly too much paste?
    dodgy temp sensor?

    or.....ye olde BIOS update?

Alright I resat the heatsink and systems running at 47-50 degrees
    Whats the norm for a p4 2.4?
    CPU Temp 50c
    System Tep 24c
    CPU Fan 2410 RPM

I'm rather glad the chip didn't get toasted which is what I'd expect after getting to 103 degrees c

You wouldn't have fried the P4 ... it would just have clocked down to protect itself. (Toms Hardware made a nice demo vid of this in action)

Actually, this had may already happened ... thus saving the CPU.
