dc++ is a file sharing proggy. It can be used *cough* to share illegal material, but of course none of that went on in dub-hub.

Aha. I wasn't sure. So, what advantage is there if any to setting up your own, rather than using some existing one like Kazaa which has a huge number of users with endless files?

You can decide who connects and who doesnt. We kept it Irish :P

    Check out

    http://www.dcstats.net/filedb/index.php?action=category&id=3

    for scripts for a DCHub

DC Hubs .. you can make them private or public .. (both options are pretty self explanitory) scripts just really let you manage the users on it, give ops access to add new registered users if its a registered users only hub, ban ips etc. They also look for things like installed programs .. iexplorer.exe etc. and kick users if it detects them.. you can set limits .. minimum shares, what ratio of connected hubs/speed/slots shared etc. detect upload limiters (some ppl set the upload speed to 1k/s .. you can set it so ppl on 1meg lines need a min share of 5 slots while 56.6k users only need 1 slot)

GeneralBot is a good one from the link above .. so is Angel/Cartman ..

Angel is good for allowing other ops reg users, ban etc. while generalbot is good for a sentinel..

I was thinking about community based networks a while back and wondering how people might use them if they became available. While most people concentrate on the internet backhaul from smaller networks, usually the bandwidth available locally (on the intranet) is much higher and can be used very effectively if people realise it is there. Perhaps this would be a good use of it.
If you have a TV card in your PC, you might record a TV program and then be able to share it with someone who didn't grab it, rather than loaning a VHS tape. There are hundreds of other uses also of course.
