Anyone looking for a state of the art digital camera should check out the new Canon EOS 1Ds. 4064 x 2704 resolution (11.4 MB files for each picture).

Unfortunately you'll need an IBM T221 flat panel display to do justice to these on your PC!

    Sample picture:

Yeah, it sure is a nice camera.
However, and it is a very big however, the cost is prohibitive, unless of course you have Independent News and Media to buy one or two for you, or you are obscenely rich.

Best European price I have seen is €8,698.00

My Dad has one and a D60. He seems to like it.

The cost is only prohibitive if you can't afford it I'm sure.

    Is he a professional?
I make some, but not much money from photography, so such a purchase to me, would be too expensive to contemplate. Particularly, when you factor in the short time that the camera will be the latest and best technology.

I bought a D30 when they were first available here, and paid nearly £3,000.00 (yes, pounds) for it. It is now probably worth about €1,000.00 (although I have seen some chancers looking for over €2,000.00 in Buy & Sell).

The EOS 10D is looking mighty tempting to me, at €1,636.00* from www.ny-camera.net (ex. VAT price).

*edited to correct ex. VAT price

That's a good price. It's €2 390 in my local shop. The NY-Camera price you quote probably excludes VAT and EU import duty.

It's a pity it doesn't support USB 2 or firewire.

There is no such thing as EU import duty (import duty only applies to imports from non-EU countries). With the VAT added the price is still very attractive at €1,898.00 (German VAT rate is 16%).

By the way, the ex. VAT price is €1,636.00 not €1,695.00 as I had stated earlier.

Where do you think a Canon camera is made? My guess would be Japan or perhaps another Asian country when it comes to the cheaper models. As fair as I know the global dominationists in Brussels haven't yet managed to extend the EU's borders that far east, though I have no doubt they are working on it!

The EU import duty on SLR cameras is 4.2%. VAT on top of that.

    No.
Import duty applies to goods only purchased from a non EU supplier.
As I am using New York Camera as a reference, who are a German based business (Germany are an EU member), no import duty applies to bring the camera into Ireland. Therefore, no other cost is incurred by the purchaser. Buying a camera from a supplier in any EU country is effectively the same as buying it here, you are charged the VAT inclusive price and nothing more (unless of course you are VAT registered).

Any duty due on the import of the camera from outside of the EU would have been paid by Canon (Europe) a long time before it reaches the consumer.

I assumed that "New York Camera" were based in and shipping from New York (or somewhere else in the US)!

I bought an Olympus C-1400 L, when they came out first, in a camera shop in D2.

A few weeks later I was in Germany and saw the same camera in a shop for about 30% less than the Dublin price!

Never again will I buy any portable gadget costing more than a few hundred Euros in Ireland without shopping around elsewhere first. A land of con merchants!

    We get zero rate.

    I think you are confused.

A bit rich from someone who posted "There is no such thing as EU import duty" at lunchtime today!

What I meant was there is no such thing as import duty when purchasing within the EU.
Yes, I should have made that clearer, but then again when I have explained it to other people on this forum, they did not seem to have difficulty grasping what I was explaining.

As you will see from the posts I have acknowledged that duty is a consideration when purchasing outside the EU.
