    Hey Folks,
Just got off the phone with one of the Istream tech guys.

Heres some info I got off him. Just in case some don't know

Also, You do not have to buy their modem's!
But if you want to, they are (currently)

    Ethernet modem option:
    Zyxel Prestige 645

    USB Modem option
    Zyxel Prestige 630

    Both are actually pretty good.

(if you want to get your own, thats fine as long as it supports PPoE)

    Whats included in self-install kit?
According to him (as far as he knows)
    You get:

    Modem (if you ordered one)
    2 single splitters
    1 double splitter
    CD containing instructions

Also I found this number 1800-503303 to be the quickest route. Just ask for one of the tech guys.

    Cheers

    Simon

Thats it? A few splitters? I thought you would need some new box like an ISDN has... So the real change is at the exchange and if we got an eircom engineer around for an extra stupid price all he does is stick on a few splitters??

Any word on how much the modems are?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 458 ✭✭shurl

Yeah I know!! Thats why i'm DIY'ing it. I can buy meself a pint with the money saved :-)

Yup, the work is done at exchange level. just goes down the existing line and the splitter does the job of that big ISDN thingy.

    Afaik, The modem prices are:

    Ethernet : €242
    USB: €145.20

But you can pick one up for ALOT cheaper else where.

    Cheers

Have the pint after you fit the splitter, otherwise spot on. No tools required other than sellotape I understand.

Any PPPoE DSL modem will do, they go as low as €50 including delivery and VAT (the other protocol used by ESAT is PPPoA)

/me would spend €200 to get Modem+Router+Ethernet Port +Wireless Hub all in one gizmo including delivery and VAT...

    see This mmm

I was planning the same thing, although I already have an
    SMC barricade wireless router.

Doesn't have an ADSL modem though :-(

Got a call today to say my line has passed ........ and they'll install adsl on 16th!

Now... I really need some advice on modem type, etc.

I have 2 computers networked with a cable.
Do I get the ethernet modem recommended by Eircom and is it an external modem?
If I get it... what else do I need to get to have both pc's online at the same time?

Any and all info and advice will be much appreciated!

    Rancid,
Sorry this'll be a quick reply.!

    Damn thats not bad (16th)
Just wondering, when did you ring to have your line checked?

    On the Modem question.

The Ethernet modem is an external version.
    Zyxel Prestige 645
If you go to http://www.zyxel.co.uk/ it has info on it.

If you want to use the two pcs, you will need a small network hub. As I think the 645 only has one LAN port.
You can pick one of those up cheap enough.
Eircoms Ethernet modem is fairly expensive (€242), i'm sure you can get cheaper ones in town, I'd say Maplins or Peats.
    (it must support PPoE)

Let me know if you need any more info/advice

    Hi
I was just wondering. Would this router http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?action=info&p=33848&t=1339&l=2&AvdID=1&CatID=19&GrpID=2&s=pl
and a couple of NIC's do in order for a couple of PC's to share an ADSL connection? Thanks.

    Simon!

I had a split line for over 3 years and I've been continuously hassling Eircom for a full line.....eventually installed 31 days ago!
I requested the adsl test the day after I got it. :)
So my test took 30 days???

    Someone else recommended this:

    http://www.dslsource.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=69

    What you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 458 ✭✭shurl

    Jeasus 30 days!
Typical. And i can't get it untill the line check is complete.!
Theres one way to drop the backlog of people requesting it.

Conlai: I don't think that will work, AFAIK it needs to have an RJ11 port.

Rancid: Its not a bad box, and it looks like it will work for Istream i've used a good bit of Netgear stuff and its always been good to me. Is it in Ireland?

    Not strange really!

    a)Its Eircom FFS
b)Comreg dont know 'which' test eircom carry out on exchanges that were adsl enabled pre radsl it could be the 'old' test
c)The database on which the tests are stored is unregistered anyway
d)Eircom are afraid of aggressive ESAT marketing and sales compaigns which could steal 'their' customers from them. so they are happy to lock 'em in for a year rather than chance a winback

But isn't the cable that runs from the eircom splitter to the modem RJ11?

thats the only connection U get on the eircom supplied equipment.

/me wakes himself up with a slap on the face! Misread the question , hehe , but that router would be perfect for Eircoms DSL offering.

I got a splitter with my modem/router (NetGear DG824M) and €ircon are still gonna charge 99 stinkin' euro for a connection, even though...

    (a) I don't want any more splitters thanks (wireless <grin>) or
    (b) CD? CD for what? I don't want their stinkin' software

What do I get for my 99 stinkin' euro? I know, I get screwed....

Okay, I thought this new release of ADSL by eircom was using rdsl or some such which basically means it widens the distance that you can be from the exchange around 5km's I was told. Anyway, I'm in Rathfarnham and my nearest exchange is in ballyboden, and no bloody way is it more than 5 kms away from my house. Thing is my line is still bloody failing.

I'm sick of talking to those silly ass people who don't have a clue, ie. oh test shows your line failed. Surely, you can get to talk to an engineer of some description who can either test your line properly or identify the problem and make suggestions to have it fixed.

I'm at my wits end here, I can't get wireless broadband becuase of a poxy block of aparments blocking the way so I can't see three rock from my house and now eircom are still giving me the whole "your line has failed" excuse, even though I could have gotten on the original trail.

So if anyone has any numbers or contacts to help me out please forward them on, send me a pm or post here.

Aha...... and I only discovered this *today* when I phoned them to talk about modems... they were selling me the €107 package!
But immediately the guy said that because I'd be an "existing customer"... I could down-grade immediately to the €55 package!

So... my date of connection remains 16th. :)

BTW, if you don't care about voice and you're feeling lazy, I'm 90% sure you can do without the splitters altogether.

Hey, I am in Carlow, was speaking to a rep today on the 1800503303 number.

Told me my exchange was ready and they just needed to test my line. I was added to the list of people to be tested and they would let me know, probably in 2 weeks or so!!!

However, i went to their site tonight and there was a "test your line" link. of course i did so, entered my acc details and phone number to be told that my line failed!! however it said something about my exchange not being ready!

So who is lieing to me? their site, which could very well beout of date, or their poor over worked rep? havent had a chance to ring them and ask ad will be day after tomorrow before i can :(

That happened me too. The web site told me that my line wasnt ADSL Ready, but when I phoned, they told me it was.

...I'm just waiting for someone else to do the self-install thingy, then I'll do it! I'll let them make the mistakes first!! haha!!
(oh - does anyone know a good/cheap modem??)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 585 ✭✭✭Wanton

well as it turns out for me, there are 2 exchanges in carlow, and the first rep i spoke to never bothered to check the second....

i will be waiting they say 3 weeks, so i think 3 months for the second exchange to be done :(
