Meanwhile, motorists will have to pay for new national roads and motorways by paying tolls, Transport Minister Seamus Brennan warned yesterday, writes Ralph Riegel.

Mr Brennan - who was speaking at the opening of the €44m Youghal bypass in east Cork - stressed that the road network remains one of the Government's top priorities with €1.2bn allocated in 2003.

Mr Brennan pointed out that this investment is 300pc more than was provided in 1998/1999.

"We are determined to deliver a modern, high-quality road infrastructure," he declared.

However, the minister acknowledged that the cost of providing such major projects must be offset by the users ultimately contributing towards their costs.

"Projects like the Youghal bypass will have an enormous impact not only on local towns which have suffered through heavy traffic levels but also on the regions through savings on safety, transport cost and even enhanced tourism," he added.

The 6.2km Youghal bypass will slash journey times between Cork and Rosslare by up to 30 minutes.

"The Government recognises that a high quality road network is of critical importance in underpinning ongoing growth and development as well as a more balanced regional development," he added.

The new €44m Youghal bypass is the State's first design-and-build road project.

I'd say "yippee its open" except as I have to deliveries in Youghal it does'nt really matter...I noticed theres finally work afoot preparing land for the Waterford bypass. Roll on 2006/7 ish.

It'll cost to use the new road...mainly a tax on Kilkenny residents who work in Waterford.

    Mike.
