Problems setting up Mac OS X Server

    hey,

I installed Mac OS X Server over OSX10.2.4.
Restart and Server Assistant starts up.
Everything is going grand (I do believe it was trying to lull me into a false sense of achievement but anyways!!) until I get to the part where I need to setup the admin account. Problem is that the original username that was on the computer is too long ie longer than 8chars. It will not let me change it so I have no idea on how to get around this.

Id like to be able to change the username from outside that drive. Because atm I cannot get past the Server Assitant, is there a way?? I can restart in a different drive.

    Rgrds,
    A.

hmm.. I dunno.. is there any way of getting a terminal window / login prompt up in that Assistant? I thought that in OSX you had a long name like "John Smith" and a short name "john", both of which worked, which one are you trying to use?

If you know the password for the 'root' user you could try logging in as that user. To set the root user's password you'd need to go 'sudo passwd root' in a terminal window whilst logged in as another user. You'd then enter the users password, then the new password for the root user twice.

I've never tried to use any of the recovery disks that come with OSX, but perhaps if you boot off one of those it will have an option for adding a new user with a shorter name, or resetting in the 'root' users password so you can log in as him.

    Thanks Dr_Teeth,

Both names are the same and both are longer than 8 characters.

I cant get anything but the GUI for the Server Assistant and there is no way that I can see to exit out of the Server Assitant. I have also tried putting this on another machine. However it would hang on the final stages of the Server Assistant. I suspected this might be because of the spec on that machine so Im currently trying to get it running on a faster machine. yet again it is stalling. Have you setup Mac OS X Sever before?? Should it take so long for the Server Assistant?? Do I need more patience??

Is there some command I could use while the computer is starting up so that it would go into the terminal rather than the GUI?? afair, there is something along these lines in linux but Im not too familiar with OSX and have failed to find an answer with google.

I do have root access so changes can be made once I know what I need to do that is.

I'd try and see if you can find a recovery CD to boot off, there must be one for people who forget their password. When that boots up you might be able to use that to make a new account with a smaller name perhaps.

If you have the root password, won't the Assistant accept that as a valid login? I haven't used OS X Server myself. :(
