And another channel leaves NTL

Well last night Carlton Cinema closed down. It was well known that the channel was having financial problems. It announced late last year it's intent to close down in 2003. Its departure now leaves TCM as NTLs only non-subscription digital Movie Channel. On channel 181 now lives a test card, with ntl:home formating stating:

"We're sorry, but owing to a commercial decision Carlton Cinema ceased broadcasting on 31st March 2003. For classic movies, you can continue to watch TCM, on channel 403 (103 in some regions)".

What’s going to replace it? I rang NTL last week and they informed me their marketing dept where aware and are planing to launch a group of new channels soon. (UK TV perhaps?). With the departure of Sky Sports and Movies from analogue, in theory this opens up 50+ additional channels for us digital viewers.

The UKTv channels would make NTL Digital a lot more appealing and a good alternative to SKY Digital. I currently have both but would be willing to get rid of sky if NTL add a few more channels.

Living in the sticks (NTL Waterford), I never saw it... but proberly have seen most of the flicks that were on it!

How many channels have been ditched or just folded
    since Go Digital arrived?

    Mike.

 Mike you're obviously not from Waterford (in the sticks???)......if you were you would appreciate the beautiful City in which we live more!! Ten minutes from one of the best beaces in Europe - Mountain ranges that rival Kerry and a great standard of living. If you ARE from Waterford.....shame on you for running down your own City (The oldest in Ireland).

Well for one reason or another since I got NTL Digital in 2001 I've seen the following come and go:

    (1) Rapture TV
    (2) Granada Breeze
    (3) Granada Living
    (4) British Eurosport
    (5) The Studio
    (6) Carlton Cinema
    (7) Channel Health

Now to replace these channels we have been given the likes of Fashion TV and BBC World.

Maybe they're planning on giving you the BBC FTV channels when they come to Sky Ireland next month?

Oh wait now...we're talking about NTL aren't we. :)

    Frameless, lighten up!

I was being post-modern, ironic or something....Dubs think Waterford is the sticks and most NTL subs are in Dublin...

    Mike.

ps glad to have BBC World at the mo.

Indeed... BBC WORLD has become very useful during the war.

To defend NTL... all but one of the above channels closed down on all platforms - not just NTL - and were (with the exception of the Studio which was part owned by NTL) outside that company's control.

The only channel actually thrown off NTL Digital was Eurosport, which was due to a carrige fees row. These happen, you remember the famous 1992 Sky vs Cablelink row?

In terms of channels gained - there are the six EMAP music channels, BBC WORLD (which is pretty much exclusive to NTL here in Ireland, unless one is one of the minority whom has a dish pointed at Hotbird), Fashion TV, and Discovery Civilisations.

Well thats true we have gained 9 additional channels since it started and only lost 7. But the 6 music channels are only available to Dublin viewers, which still leaves Galway and Waterfold subscribers with less channels now then to start off with.

*shudders* oh yea I remember that..serious withdrawl symptoms! ;) - and what did we get instead? NBC Super Channel! - it was during this time that I finally decided to get a satellite dish as soon as I could possibly afford it - ALL the channels, available from the DAY they launch (not like Sky Movies Gold on Cablelink for example), and (at the time anyway) for more-or-less the same monthly fee as Cablelink were charging for their basic+6 premium channel package!
