i've been asked to setup a lan with about 6 computers, but what i was thinking was to have just one unit and about 6 moniters to save money, i was wondering is this possable.
"users must be able to work on different peices of software at the same time".
reason for having 6 moniters and just one unit is to get rid of the lan.
if this is possable could any one tell me if i need any extra hardware, or special moniters.

hmm, I wouldn't say so. Stringing multiple keyboards and mice and monitors off one machine and having each running a different users session would require lots of specific and expensive hardware.

A better solution would be to buy 6 cheap eMacs and connect them to a single more powerful Mac (xserve). Then all your users can share their documents, programs, printing facilities, internet access etc on the central machine.

This means you only need to backup one hard-disk and its easier to upgrade versions etc when everyone is running their programs from the same copy. In addition staff can move from one eMac to another and continue to do their work without copying the documents and programs across.

However, with a network of only 6 machines, perhaps you don't need to do that, just have 6 machines networked together for file sharing, 'net access and printing. You'll have to spend more time managing software, settings and copying files around but it's cheaper than buying a mac server.

Short answer: with Macs, having 6 people using one machine is either not possible or requires expensive hardware - buying 6 individual machines is cheaper. Buying 6 machines and running the network with a central server is technically better but obviously more expensive.

    Teeth.
