Finally! Tribal Gathering is coming to Ireland in the form of Tribal Sessions – one of the UK’s best weekly club nights. If it’s one thing Tribal Sessions has taught us it’s that line-ups maketh not the club. With superclubs crashing down all round, Tribal has survived the cull maintaining its fresh new take on acid house clubbing. Sure DJs come into it, but it’s the Tribal atmosphere, and the feathers and facepaint fun which make Tribal so special.

For their first trip to Dublin, Tribal have enlisted some of the best quality names in dance music to get the party going. First up we have King Unique – Underworld remixers, currently one Junior Recordings’ most successful artists, and of course Dj’s! Their work frequently features on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection on BBC Radio 1, and they’ve already completed an Essential mix on the same station…

Add to the party Inland Knights, Andy and Laurence. Producers, Dj’s and record label owners of Drop Music – one of the best underground labels in existence. Their blend of bassy, funk driven house is extremely popular across many genres, and their party shakin beats are popular all over the world…

And to kick proceedings off? None other than Tribal Sessions resident extraordinaire – Greg Vickers. At just 23, he has already been resident at Tribal Sessions for over two years, has completed an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, played FIVE sets at Tribal Gathering this year, and in November 2002 compiled the covermount CD for Mixmag. With an increasingly heavy djing schedule, including Bugged Out! At Cream, and The End in London, we’re very lucky to have him over to Dublin for our inaugural Tribal Sessions in Dublin!

The lineup is complete, the feathers and facepaint are ready. Only one question remains – Are You Tribal?

    KING UNIQUE - BIOGRAPHY

King Unique is the duo of Matthew Roberts – ex. Cream resident, life-long DJ and prolific remixer, and the new noise on the block, Matt ‘Watkins’ Thomas - the studio behind Mainframe and Watkins. The two decided to join forces full-time at the beginning of 2000, choosing Junior records as the home for their new sound. The result? A series of diverse club tracks and remixes sampling funky and proggy house elements, tied together with head twisting production. Pete Tong’s recent choice of the King Unique remix of Mutiny’s ‘The Virus’ for Essential New Tune (on the same show that he played three of their other records…) sealed their reputation as innovative peak-time club producers, and a subsequent Essential Mix confirmed they are back with a bang.

Their two-man DJ shows blend the best elements of a classic DJ set with all the latest studio gadgets and exclusive CD edits of tracks. Roberts spins the vinyl and CDs whilst Thomas brings computers, samplers and FX to the mix, giving the raw sound and excitement usually associated with the likes of Underworld and the Chemical Brothers. These sets have worked to devastating effect at Cream, earning them repeat bookings and attracting more gigs at Lush in Ireland and Steve Lawler’s ‘Session’ night at Code.

Record wise, King Unique’s debut release for Junior, ‘Dirty’, was a huge hit last Summer, Thomas is the man behind the massive Black am by Watkins (Sony/Shaboom) and also behind the storming mainframe project on Fuju. Roberts is the man behind UBU Pixels signed for the first release on Dave Piccioni’s, first label since Azuli - Anodyne. They’ve had massive support form the likes of Danny Tenaglia and Deep Dish on all their work and are fiercely proud of their status as the men who got Steve Lawler to play Madison Avenue’s Don’t Call Me Baby at Code…

    INLAND KNIGHTS - BIOGRAPHY

Whilst at college in 89 Laurence discovered the pleasures of acid house parties, as these parties progressed into raves Laurence turned to the free party scene as a way to escape the corporate clutches of clubbing. The enjoyment people were having spurred Laurence and friends into starting Smokescreen based in Sheffield 1991, a collective of like minded people who would set up their sound system in woodlands and many other sites surrounding Sheffield and the midlands.

As Smokescreen's reputation grew and they boomed in 94 with Smokescreen putting on a party each week for a year, forging links with similar collectives around the Midlands. Smokescreen relocated to Nottingham in 1996, where the parties continued until the sound system was seized by the Police in 1999, but not before Smokescreen had managed to squeeze in a European tour! Laurence had met Andy Riley, also a DJ , over the years at various parties. Andy was already recording as Toka Project with Steve Walker and had built up the To-ka studio with another friend Jason Cowley , Andy was to become a core member of Smokescreen in 1996. Laurence was no stranger to a studio himself and in 1998 he joined forces with the To-ka studio with the aim of starting Drop , it wasn't long before Laurence and Andy were writing mostly together , and Inland Knights was formed for the first Drop release.

Intergroove Distribution signed Drop Music late in 1998 and guided the fledgling label through their formative releases. Drop Music has gone from strength to strength and as Inland Knights, Laurence and Andy have not looked back. Their collaborations have found them favour with a number of top DJs and labels and their Djing has taken them far and wide with a tour of South Africa in 1999 and regular dates all over the world. Drop is known by a most DJs as a quality label because of the quality of music and the consistency of releases. The Drop sound is carved from the years of running and DJing on the large dub system at hundreds of Smokescreen parties. The bass and beat have ground their way in to the Andy and Laurence, and has completely formed and forged the unique playing and writing styles behind the label.
