Communications regulator ComReg is inviting interested parties to comment on a proposal to trial an Electronic Numbering (ENUM) service in Ireland. ENUM is an emerging telecoms protocol that can automatically give out contact details of registered users to anyone who knows the fixed-line phone number of the person they wish to contact. Registered users can choose to make available their e-mail address, fax number and mobile phone number. Service providers could take advantage of the service to automate actual connection over an appropriate medium after the contact details have been issued. ComReg says the service could provide opportunities for telecoms operators, Internet service providers, directory operators and communications software developers.

Independent News & Media recorded a steep drop in pre-tax profits for the year 2002, due to an exceptional charge related to a fall in the value of its investment in cable TV company Chorus. The charge of EUR82.5 million contributed to the fall in pre-tax profits from EUR61.8 million to EUR22.2 million. The group says underlying profits rose 8 percent, however.
