resolutions and screen sizes

hey all. I'm thinking about switching to Mac.
I need to buy a laptop and since I mostly run
Linux I was thinking that I might try out Mac
Hardware. It'd also be cool to have OsX
    to play with.

One of my biggest concerns about switching
over is with screen resolutions. I run my desktop
    at 1600x1200 or 400x1050 on a flat 17"
monitor. I have an old Dell laptop that runs
    at 1024x768 on a 12" screen. I have windows
and Linux running on it but find it really hard
to get anything useful done on it because of
    the small resolution.

What do people thing of the resoution of the
iBooks? They all run at 1024x768 (12" and 14")
but is it less noticable with OsX. Maybe OsX
is designed to be more usable at lower
resolutions. The 15" iMac uses the same.

[edit]just checked and it seems that most
that pc laptops use 1024 as well. Maybe the
    14" make it bareable.[/edit]

Also I assume that 1024x768 will be the max
in linux too, right? which could be quite
limiting. It takes quite a while to get used
to a res that small, but I could probably
adjust if I felt it was worth it.

Also, I'd be planning on using my 17"
monitor when I'm at home. Will this work well?
It's a pnp dell. Would OsX and the video card
let me increase the res when using an
external monitor? How fiddly would this
    be?

[edit]oh and could someone maybe post
a screenshot of osX running at 1024
with an app or two running so i can get
an idea, and so i can admire it's
    prettyness , thanks[/edit]

The limitation is not with the OS but with the TFT screen technology. So get the biggest laptop screen you can get. On the Mac its 1280x1024 on the 17" laptop and on the PC its 1600x1200 on the 15/16" laptop screen. You could run Linux on either machine.

Heres a link for you http://www.math.tamu.edu/~Stefani.Kokel/laptop.html

Personally I think you'd be straining your eyes.

Yeah, unfortunately the 17" is the price of a small car ;)

I'm thinking I'll get the 12" Powerbook with Superdrive. Seems like a good tradeoff.

I figure I can live with 1024 when I'm on the move. And I'll be able to use monitor spanning when I'm at home right? Anyone got any experince with this?

I figure I could have the powerbook running at 1024 with itunes running on the lcd, and be browsing the web etc.. on my monitor at 1400 or something like that. Will that work?
