    Article here

Just as we think we are getting somewhere, the UK jumps way ahead again.

BT really seems to have changed its ways and is really competing and innovating now.

    - Entry level 256k service which BT don't plan on selling as broadband despite being DSL based.
(Unlike Eircom who still think 128k ISDN is high speed internet access)

    - 1 mb service on the way.

    - Extending the range of their 512k DSL service from 5.5km to 6km to cover 97% of all people connected to DSL enabled exchanges.

    - BT is also mulling whether to introduce a "simple fix" that would mean people connected to their local exchange via optical fibre (which doesn't support ADSL) - rather than copper - should be able to get broadband.

"simple fix" - according to Eircom it would be easier to reverse the spin of the planet!

    - DSL registration and activation service for people in non-DSL areas.

    - Expansion of its SDSL service.

Will Eircom ever wake up, there is plenty of money to be made in bb (or lost to wireless companies).

In fairness, they're trying and eircom already have a 1meg service. Prices will fall with interest i would assume.

Isn't that just leeching NTLs customers? :)

This will be a consumer product (and priced likewise), BT already have 1 mb services aimed at business (and faster SDSL products).

Eircoms 1mb service is strictly for business , well anyone can get it, but the cost is far too much for most people.

No this is aimed at some unlucky people with a phone line that has some optical cable between their home and the exchange. This type of line stops you from getting DSL on their phone line.
