    MICHAEL MOORE'S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH:
"On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glen and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this. I've invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us. They are here in solidarity with me because we like non-fiction. We like non-fiction and we live in fictitious times. Fictitious election results, that elect a fictitious president. We live in a time when we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons, whether it's the fiction of duct tape or the fiction of orange alerts. We are against this war. Shame on you Mr Bush! Shame on you! Any time you've got the Pope and the Dixie chicks against you, your time is up!"

Fair play to him it was disgrace that he was cut off with the music like that.

I wonder what else he would have gone on to say. The guy is very intelligent and his speech I am sure if it were to go on any longer would have been well thought out and well spoken.

The man is a legend. It was class the way he was completely oblivious to the other academy members booing at him.

What he was saying is probably true but may also be slanderous so really they had to block him out with the music.

Since when has he been a member of the academy btw?

yeah, they didn't braudcast a word of it in the highlights show sent arount the world for network television, He shows no sign of slowing down though, Bowling for Colombine was a brilliant doc' hope he does one about this war.

I was watching him and thought he was very brave. Fair Play to him, and that Spanish director..whoever he was- spoke about legality and peace.

Did anyone see who clapped for him in the audience? some actor was clapping profusely but I couldn't see who it was.

I dont mean to burst anybodys anti hero loving bubble here but didnt it cross your mind he could have done it for attention?I think he believes the war is wrong but his speech-cum-rant could also be interpreted as an oppurtuinty to get his name on the headlines and the front pages.
I mean, despite the fact his film won best documentary in all honesty how many of your friends have even heard of the guy before Oscars night? Was Bowling for Columbine on in your local cinema? It wasnt at mine and I doubt it was at many placesexcept the IFC.I heard of the guy primarily because his film generated alot of interest on the Film forum but before Oscars night the average man on the street never heard of him unless he is a regular at independant cinemas.Whereas now everybody saw"that fat american lad at the oscars who started complaining about Bush".
Look well done to him and I think he believes what he says in public but TBH it looked like a bit of a publicity stunt.
I wish we had found out which actors applauded and booed......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭The_Bullman

so you missed his tv shows, books, etc...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Actually i think he was just getting angry at the audience for booing him, not that he was ranting.

And the academy did not have to vote for him they should have known that he was againist the war.
I wish we had found out which actors applauded and booed......

Yes me too. but then i don't think its up to famous people to support (or not) the war. It's like when you see them supporting candidates for the election. They should not get involved

The Gopher: but TBH it looked like a bit of a publicity stunt.

Micheal Moore is a man who has dedicated many years of his life to what he believes in... Whether it's Gun control, rallying against corporate America, anti-war commentary, politics etc..

If it's a publicity stunt, then he's been keeping up the pretence for at least 15 years!

Look him up in IMDB, you will see his list of works, as an Actor, Writer, Director and Producer.

Check out the reviews of his books on Amazon.

Or even hark back to the TV series of the mid-90's (which aired on UTV - I think) in which he stood-up for the small-guy, against the big corporate giants.. I think it was called TV Nation

Was it not Adrien Brody, who won the Best Actor award, that made that moving speech at the end??? Yes, I think it was.

I think Harrison Ford was smiling in agreement with Moore's comments, not sure who was clapping and booing though

Micheal is a Smeghead and an Annoying Twat, thinks hes such a smartar$e with his smug git preachy rants.
    * slaps Micheal Moore upside his head for making an inappropriate rant @the Oscars.

He should take a leaf from Nicole Kidman, Susan Sharondon & Tim Robbins to know what he SHOULD have done

    >TWAT!!! ENUFF SAID.

    * no i dont think its a publicity stunt, his been @ this for years.

Also ".... The Pope AND the Dixie Chicks!" WOW theres a strange mixture of out of date lifestlye guidelines that havent changed in 60yrs (the head of the Catholic Church)and a band worse than the Corrs that have cornered the middle-of-the-road redneck music sector. Run for the hills boys!!!! Nothing can compete with that level of mind numbing mediocrity and straight-jacketed ideology that gives rise (religion gone mad) to the likes of the Taliban. ( or substitute your own brand of religious fundamentalism here)

i heard that they edit'd the "claping" to make it suond quieter and made the "booing" louder" ....its somthing to think about... and yes he is v.inteligent

I think the Pope-and-dixie-chicks comment was meant to illustrate the idea that if even the most bland, opinionless, morality-free, don't-rock-the-boat merchants are roused to an opinion then something is wrong.

Moore is a thoughtful commentator on many issues, and one of the few examples of a principled man making a difference. However much I agree with most of his positions, I do think this war should be supported. It's the lesser of two evils and any liberal should be prepared to take the opportunity to unseat Saddam, even if it is without a useful moral background that it purports to have.

Yeah, I noticed there was the beginning of a huge cheer that was suddenly drowned out by booing.

Bowling for columbine was also at the screen cinema.....
As for saying Michael Moore had a rant for a PUBLICITY STUNT??!!!!
What about all the stunts Bush is pulling at the moment?
    Somebody HAS to say something.......
System of a down put it recently...."some people say protest music belongs to the 60s but the world is more ****ed up now than ever...."
Read "Stupid White Men" and then make your mind up......

This thing about Michael, is that he is pushing his own agenda (aren't we all) and will stretch the truth/make generisations to suit.

For example in 'Downsize This' he points out that at the last US general election 20% of the US electorate voted for Bush, which means, according to MM that 80% oppose Bush. It doesn't.

For an alternative view on Bowling for Columbine see this link Critique

I like to read his books and watch his tV/film.

But I never take anything he has to say at face value, more as a starting point for making my own mind up.

Most of what was in Bowling for Columbine was fabricated, or clever editing. I know on another forum I said the reverse, however there is a site (hardy something), that goes into great detail where Moore has lied or altered the truth.

    For example.

    Bank part - Staged.

Hestons speech to the NRA - cut to make it look like he was being insensitive (his interview with heston is worth watching though)

Trying to force an interview from someone who was trying to leave, tried to make it look like the person was dodging the questioning.

Buying bullets in Canada as a US Citizen - Staged otherwise extremly illegal.

NRA/KKK links - incorrect dates in the cartoon.

There are other bits as well. But if you remove all that the rest is quite good. Shame he had to lie about so much to get his message across.

Yeah, Michael moore, twisting and spinning the facts, to suit his own warped arguments damages his credibility, a bit of the kettle calling the pot black arsé really.

Turns out that everybody had only forty five seconds to speak. They were counted down when they hit ten seconds and then the mmusic started whether they were ready or not. Michale Moore was not the only person to be cut off.

He didn't go over his 45 seconds. He was purposely cut off, according to the Oscar's own producer, Gil Cates.

Cates Chose To Drown Out Michael Moore

Oscars producer Gil Cates drowned out Best Documentary award winner Michael Moore with music on Sunday night to prevent a clash at the Kodak Theatre. Cates feared those booing and those applauding the outspoken Bowling For Columbine director would provoke ugly scenes, so he chose to cut off his controversial anti-war speech early. But Cates was happy to kill the music and let Best Actor winner Adrien Brody have a few extra moments to pay tribute to a pal fighting in Iraq. Cates says, "I thought it was inappropriate for Michael Moore to start calling names but I was happy to let Adrien Brody have his moment. It was a great speech."

Hmm, a review of BfC on P45.net that starts with
    Thank God for Michael Moore

    So it's unbiased and informative:rolleyes:

Ahhh - meet the new boss same as the old boss...

I like Micheal Moores politics. I like his unconventionality. I like that he speaks up against vested interests and fights on the side of the little guy.

I think he thinks we are all morons.

I mean, if people cannot see through the thin veneer of truth that washes over Stupid White Men (and they evidently can't as it's a worldwide best seller) it can only be because THEY ARE STUPID!

It's totally selective journalism, a sly editing of the facts to make his case look stronger and the enemies weaker. The problem for me is that he doesn't even need to dress things up. Bush IS an idiot who is merely a figurehead for his dads mates and their evil greed. Corporate America IS a soulless wasteland where the dollar takes precedence over every decent instinct mankind possesses. Stupid White Men contained a lot of interesting information, but I threw it down in disgust half way through because I was just so bored with the many half-truths it's filled with.

James Woods, in Oliver Stones 'El Salvador', berates a rebel for executing the fascist soldiers with "YOU'VE BECOME JUST LIKE THEM"...

The powers that be lie, cajole, trick and cheat us every day of the week with their selective reporting of events. Along comes Moore, purporting to be on our side, and does just the same.

    Shame on YOU, Micheal Moore.
