Apparently red hat 9 will be available March 31 for download.
Quick out of the blocks or not, wonder will it be much different to 8.0 or is it just for the sake of not calling it 8.1

FYI, it's only available from that date for paid subscribers. It goes to retail and the ftp servers from April 7.

Surely they can't prevent subscribers putting it up for free download?

I doubt they'd say anything unless one of their mirrors or a large agency did it.

It's probably wrong to exploit the fact that Red Hat won't stop you putting the distro onto an FTP server.... since techies (techies like people who read this board) have jobs that depend on the software being sold.

The thought of a 'Warez' (used loosely) version of GPL'ed software is strange too.

The move direct to 9.0 skillping the normal point releases of RedHat is interested. Obviously they see a commercial benefit in bring their major number in line with that or Mandrake. (Many users might see something they might commonly think of as "Linux 9" as being better than "Linux 8")

Its skipping because RedHat 9 doesnt retain backwards binary compatability from 8. Nothing special :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭Arithon

And apparently the main reason for a break in backwards compatibility is that they want to incorporate NPTL (Native POSIX Thread Library). This is a major improvement in threading scalability, speed, POSIX compliance, yadda yadda. And RedHat 9 folks get to be guinea pigs.

Personally, I'm looking foward to trying it out - some major steps have been made towards full POSIX compliance. I'm afraid I don't know exactly how much of it has been backported to 2.4, but some of the drool-worthy possibilities: inter-process synchronisation primitives, core dumps which dump all threads (not just the active thread), correct signal handling...

Just installed it there - no great changes on the surface. It looks very similar to Redhat 8.0. The install is a bit more polished and it's very intuitive. It's a bit slow on my PII 233 though!

The first fix for RH9 came out this morning - for VSFTP (very secure ftp) :)

i have it burned to disc now and i shall be installing it tonight.

In regards to the winmodems problem any fixes on it yet.

Aslo i need a good free tutorial site i can get various tutorials off for red hat linux 9.

i wanna be able to do interesting things with it.

Both Connexant/Rockwell and Lucent Winmodems have Linux drivers available these days.

If you have a USR, tough.

Add Broadcom to that evil side of the WinModem list. They kinda sort might have some drivers that may work with one or two specific long since obsolete versions of a RedHat kernel, but that's no bloody use to anyone.

Anyone installed it yet? I'm just burning the ISO images now, and should be installing it this evening. Wish me luck. I'll need it with my graphics card.:(

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Balls! Well, that was a waste of 3 CDs. Got a full 30 seconds into the installation before it gave up. It claimed to recognise my gfx card, but couldn't start the XWindow server. End of story.

    Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish!

What sort of graphics card do you have? Post information.

Reinstall without starting X as default, then tweak your XF86Config-4 file.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I think most of the relevant info is here. You may recall me having the same issue with Madrake, Slackware and FreeBSD a couple of months back, but at least those distros made some sort of effort at installing themselves.

When you say "without starting X as default", you mean the text-only install? It'll just delay the inevitable I fear, as when it comes to getting linux to date my ugly sister of a gfx card, it's just going to cancel at the last minute again.

Yeah just looking at that thread.

Your error was to load the ati module and the radeon module.
I haven't done ati cards before, but, I doubt you should be loading drivers for the ATI Rage at all.

    Also.
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONInitVisualConfigs failed (depth 8 not supported). Disabling DRI.

Don't load dri. From the logfile you posted in that thread, it looks like X had started sucessfully.

Perhaps it was a window manager issue.

In any case, (not that I remember), but, Red Hat's installation routine should give you the option not to start X on boot.

    Check around for that.

    Cheers, Typedef.
What should I do to tell it not to install any Rage etc. drivers ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,564 ✭✭✭Typedef

    Got me mate.

I'm assuming RH9 allows you not to start X as default.
At least 7.3 (the last time I did an install of that) certainly did.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Gave it a go in text mode, but there was some leftover crap on the partition - did my head in trying to remove/overwrite it.
For the craic I threw Mandrake 9.0 at it again, and by some inexplicable miracle it installed with the generic vesa driver with a nice 1024x768x16mill colours display. No recognition of the TV/out connection, naturally enough, but it's a major improvement. I can think of no reason why it would work now and not on any of the 5 previous occasions, but hey, not complaining. :)

Gone right off topic, so I'll stop there.

Try upping your colour depth to 24bpp then add
FbBpp 32 right under the colordepth option in your XF86Config-4 file.

That should give you 32 bit colour.

In any case I reckon the reason you weren't getting a proper display with Mandrake was because you were using both the Rage and the Radeon drivers.

So, try using juse the Radeon drivers that come with X.
You should see performance improvements in X.

    Typedef.

Installed RH9 last week - failed to cog my graphics card properly and wouldn't display any resolution above 800x600! - on top of all that seems to need much more space than RH8. I'm back using RH8.

What gfx card are you using? Kind of mad that a previous version would recognise your card but the new one not.

its mad but true - its an ATI Mobility M1 (running on a laptop as you might well have guessed) - tried mucking about with all sorts of settings but with no luck - I needed linux running properly so a reinstallation of RH8 was essential but when I have more time I'll have another whack at 9.
