censorship, do we need it?

    Heres my rant.

I went into hmv some weeks back to buy a few dvds and when i couldnt find them, i enquired at the desk and was informed they had been banned in ireland. One was the Steve o dvd, which i had to buy from play.com in the end and the other was a ufc dvd.

This got me thinking. Why should these governement regulated censorship bodies be able to decide what is suitable for me to watch and what is not. I understand that they must impose some kind of rating system on the them, in order to stop young children mistakenly buying them and being scarred for life after purchasing "Long dong ding dong".

But if they are so worried about people reenacting the violent/sexual scenes, why dont they impose an over 21's, or because this is ireland over 25's.

The same goes for the cinema, having some scenes cut. Ffs man i've been watching porno movies since my early teens, so is a little sexual action going to turn 15 year olds in to sex crazed maniacs after watching it.

Tv too, they are allowed show beer commercials in the early hours of the morning when young children are watching which tbh i reckon is worse than that ad for wrigleys chewing gum with the dog which must be shown after the watershed. The same can be said for various forms of literature which has been banned/ re edited over the years because of the strict(more so magazines) censorship.

In this day and age, censorship should be much more relaxed. What do you think?

Actually in areas it is just right, others too loose. In some cases outright censorship should apply, in others age or time restrictions.

I am all for the outright banning of tobacco and alcohol advertising (and maybe a few other foibles). I am in favour of maintain the ban on child pornography. I think that the pictures of the POWs over the weekend should have been banned altogether (much like child pornography there is the initial and sustained abuse). All to often the arguments against censorship are commercial not artistic.

Regarding age limits, in the cinema at least (not sure about video) the limits largely apply a demand for supervision not an outright ban. That said, there is a good reason to severely restrict younger poeple when in comes to things like "28 Days Later" (extreme violence and horror). A lot of commercial products shouldn't be advertised with or next to children's programming.

No idea what these are or contain. However it is rare that things get banned these days so it must have been fairly extreme or had a lot of complaints. Is it a matter of the "artists" purely being obscene (a subjective matter) to gain noteriety / sales.

I would be against raising or introducing a higher censorship band. One is an adult at 18 and should be treated like any other adult and has athe right to choose what they want to watch.

Of course things like child pornography should be banned.
However things like hardcore pornorgrapy between consenting adults as long as there is their right minds etc ect should be allowed for sale to over 18's.

Fake violence imo should be allowed also as for steve-o i havent seen the video but i can guess what's in it and i think it is up to the person if they want to watch it or not so as long as they are over 18 they should be allowed get it.

What makes us diffrent to people in the US,UK? we should have the right to watch/hear what we want as long as no one is hurt.
