Well I got it running on a 9500 dual boot with OS 9.1 but while it looks geat with KDE 3 its also very slow. Probably needs a G3 or G4 to do it justice. I'm going to look into ways to speed up the GUI.

I'm thinking about getting an ibook and running
yellowdog on it. Anyone got any idea how well
    that would run?

Well an ibook would be a lot faster then this 9500 so I reckon it would be fine. The more ram the better aparently.

I was thinking of doing the same...
Is there much difference between yellowdog and other linux distros? (maybe that's a dumb question)

Debian sid is where it's at if you're running on a Mac. dri-trunk recommended if you're using an ATI chipset, as most Macs do.

I dunno, was wondering that myself. Looks and works the same as the few I mucked around with so far. But I'm just a newbie to Linux. If you are running on a G3 or G4 you don't need OS9 to boot from either. Only the older machines need to do that.

Yellowdog is Redhat 8.0 plus some stuff from Redhat 9 with a load of powerpc stuff thrown in and apt-get added too.

Other distros that work well for powerpc are mandrake, debian and gentoo.

I'll probably end up running all of them :)

How do I go about trimming back the bells and whistles of the GUI to speed it up a bit? Still want to keep some form of GUI though.

Well I don't know anything powerpc specific, but I'm pretty involved in the Gnome project and know it backwards, So if you want to use Gnome then I can give you loads of tips.

    1. Use a Simple Metacity (Window Border) theme like Mist or Metabox. The more complicated the theme and the more pixmaps it uses the slower your window operations will be.

    2. If you don't use icons on the desktop turn off nautilus drawing the desktop. To do this run gconf-editor and change /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop

    3. Use a background gradient instead of a
    pixmap.

    4. Use the 1.3.x nvidia drivers instead of 1.4.x

    5. If you want to use the nautilus file manager
I recomment turning off the sidebar and location bar by default. Ctrl+L will call up the location bar when you need it.

    6. Use Galeon 1.3.x with mozilla 1.3

    7. Make sure fam is on.

    Non-gnome stuff:

    8. Turn of as many unused services as possible (leave portmap on for fam).

    9. Use hdparm to make sure that your
hard drives are running as fast as possible.

    10. Avoid using OpenOffice :)

If you want to use KDE then just use the cc to turn of as much eye candy as possible.

    Why?

    thanks for the tips!

    one thing though:
    10. Avoid using OpenOffice

Why? I noticed the Windows port seemd quite slow in comparision to MS Office.

Just curios, are there and other Linux office progs that easily work with MS Office files, mainly doc and xls?
