Teeth braces on adults

Hi, I was just wondering if any adults on here have/had braces? I'm 22 and want to get my teeth in order, close up a few gaps etc, just wondering if it's true you only get the best results when you get braces when you're a kid, or is this just an old wives tale?

Also, what sort of price would you expect to pay for braces, train tracks in particular, and how long did you have to wear them for?

    Hiya,

I'm about to get mine on next month. It's not true you only get best results when you're very young, but you do need to be reasonably young to get good results. Anyone in their twenties would be totally fine.

Mine are costing 3,800 and will have to be worn for 2 years.

€3800 wow. Do orthodontists usually let you pay it off over a period of time? I'm meant to be saving for a car :)

Yeah you pay for initial appointment, x-rays and moulds seperately. Works out at about 200 euro all together I think.

Then I paid 800 up front and 600 every quarter until it's paid.

I had mine done about a year or two ago, You do get better results when your a kid/teens but that doesnt mean they wont work, it just works faster on developing teeth, U dont really notice them till u have to put the bands on them, but thats later on, one thing that will annoy yea is the retainor, which i never wear :D

I have such a wonderful smile!

Best results are acheived in teenage years because as the jaws are still growing, it's possible, for instance, to make them grow wider to accommodate teeth.

However it's possible to get orthodontic work done at any age, so long as your gums/teeth are healthy.

I had brases in from 18 to 20 and I have to say I am gald I got them after I had left school.

However I feel that Tom Cruise is a little to old for them.

Get see through ones, the white ones that aren't as jaws like. I wish i had known about them at the time. at 22 its not to late.

I was told not to get them in my early teens because my teeth were still growing and that it would take longer to get them straight.

my teeth were ok and i got braces. I got them when i was 13 and they were takin off when i was 18! They are a living hell, but well worth it! My teeth are great and everyone says so (me drflates his head).

The pain is easy to cope with, but the cuts are annoying

GL with them, it will be worth it

i was supposed to get braces when i was younger, but i never did, i wouldn't let them take out the required teeth coz they wanted to stick a big needle in my mouth.
im kinda paranoid about my teeth now, alot of people are getting orthodontic treatment these days and most people have very straight teeth. im considering getting it done now, i dunno how it'll work out tho...

Im 18 and Im considering them. My teeth arent HORRIBLY crooked but there's room for improvement. In fact my front two "edge" teeth are all that need straightning. Will I have to get mingin train tracks or can I get away with something more subtle?

You mean your canines? The teeth either side your two front teeth? I think you would need train tracks yes, but the crookedness could be caused by eye teeth coming down and pressing on those teeth, twisting them a little. Best to go see your dentist and see what he thinks, they'd probably need to take an x-ray, it's highly likely that your eye teeth are putting pressure on the canines tho...and I think you can work out yourself what that means :(

I've got pretty mangled teeth, my head is too small for my teeth. (of course my brain is too large also.. naturally... ahem). It doesn't really cause much problems except when my clever wisdom teeth start moving around trying to come out. I, however, haven't 'fixed' them because I kinda like them.

My point is - one does not need to have sociologically 'perfect' teeth. Tbh I find 'flawed' teeth in a woman quite sexy. It makes her look real and comfortable with herself. In fact I like many types of 'ugly' women (notice the quotes on ugly). Sheesh maybe I'm desperate :|

Oh, and sorry for going off topic.

Gordon you are so cute... LOL

I have a small gap in between my front two top teeth and I have never really considered braces or anything. I feel quite comfortable with myself and my friends say if I ever got it fixed it just wouldn't be me? So...then again if it makes you feel uncomfortable to smile then Good Luck with the braces.
    ;)

Logic, I knew you with your fetish for braces would make a responce to this thread!! LOL Still cute though:rolleyes:

I got my brace when I was 21 and had it on for 2 years. I'd recommend anyone to get it done 'cos the results are great and it's fairly painless except for two things, No.1 is when they increase the gauge of the steel/track that goes around the teeth or when they place springs in between the anchors that are glued onto your teeth. The springs are used to push the teeth apart for moving out of place teeth into position.

And No.2 and the worst part, well for me, was when the anchors rub against the inside of your lips causing ulcers, doesn’t happen all the time but you’ll know all about it when it does!! But this can be fixed by using dental wax over the anchors!! Oh, almost forgot the other thing that was uncomfortable more than painful was getting the back anchors put on that have the metal bit that joins the two caps together and runs across the roof of your mouth. As I said, it’s not painful, it just takes a little getting used to when eating and be careful about getting things stuck in it ;o) fnar fnar!!!

I didn’t have to pay for mine so I don’t know about costs. I was on a Social Welfare waiting list from when I was 12, yes twelve!!!! it’s not a typo, waiting lists, eh!!!
I only got my top teeth done as my bottom teeth were fine. But because I have a slight under bite I was given the option to have corrective surgery on my lower jaw that would’ve entailed having my lower jaw broken, reset and wired!!! Needless to say, I declined that option. I like soup but didn’t fancy having it for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 3 months!!!! A friend of mine is getting the broken jaw surgery done when she gets her braces off, the crazy bint!!! Each to their own I suppose!!!

    B.

[quiz kid donny smith] I used to be smart, [/quiz kid donny smith]

Do you really need them or are you buying into the "all american" smile fascists point of view.

row after row of identical, straight and uniform pearly whites, the image terrifys me

dont let the tooth nazis win!

unless of course you have teeth like Agrajag,

€3,?00 is a lot of cash. Would you consider dentures? A night out in Westside Co. Galway comes with free teeth removal (although their methods are a little outdated I hear, the little buggers).

I'm so nervous about getting them! I've been putting it off for years but decided to go for it (I'm 18 in a few weeks) The problem for me is the fear that the pain will be so excutiatng, I wouldn't be able to handle it, and the fact that I'm going to university in september makes the thought worse. As it is I'm a very shy person and right now I feel very self concious about my teeth, (even though my parents say its fine~ but let's face it parents, always thinks their kids are perfect even if they look like something that's been dragged from the corners of the earth) I just don't know what to do. *bites nails.* In England, (where I live at the moment, the prices are around £1500. Roughy $2500 American dollars.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't notice girls teeth very much at all. Thinking over the girls I know, I'm not sure I could tell you who had good teeth and who had bad. And as for those that had braces, well that never bothered me either..

They're pretty insignifcant when you consider what other cosmetic issues you could have. And as you've seen, some guys consider them to be a plus-point :)

just a note on the clear train tracks you can get. just make sure you don't eat anything with too much colouring in it, curry etc. a friend of mine had them and they turned yellow after she drank coke. not a good look.

got a retainer when I was 12, ****test device known to man! who ever invented it deserves to die! do you have to get a retainer first or can you just get tracks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Maguined

just a question to all those people who are no longer teenagers but are now thinking about getting it done, how bad can your teeth be ? realy like, the whole perfectly straight rows of teeth is kinda freaky and unsettling, as long as your teeth are growing at horrible angles they should be fine because if they werent surely your dentist would have recomended them when you were much younger.

slightly imperfect teeth is the way to go, a bit of character and distinction to your mouth, but then what would i know i got accused of having vampire teeth recently :(

i wonder how long it is before people start posting up pictures of their teeth to see who has the straightest and more importantly freakiest teeth out there ?

I got braces when i was young, and a number of retainers. teeth are perfect now (if stained from coke, fags and coffee) but straight. cept for the one i broke when i was 14.

I got tracks first, then the retainer for a few months to retain them in a straight postion. Of course they went back to being crooked as soon as I stopped using the retainer.
