Since its convention to use lgb and not glb what do you think of changing the forum name ? Its a minor thing but why not ?

Yeah it's a minor thing but I say we should defy convention! Let's not conform to all those petty sterotypes! We have the right to be different!

*BTW, yes I am being facetious

Er, on a more serious note, if it helps people to understand the purpose and nature of this board better by adhering to a naming convention, then yes, a name change would be in order. Otherwise, I fail to see the point really, it's just a name.

Yes, its the naming convention really. People might pick up on lgb more than glb. Its a small thing but small things matter too !!

No objections here, although I'm really not sure it's that important :)

(Can't say I was aware that this was the "convention"... Bloody student types imposing their will on the world again, grumble...)

Gay seems to be associated more with male homosexuality by some people, thus we have lesbians referring to themselves as er... lesbians. Plus bisexuals do not like to be referred to as gay either so ....

    gay

    adj. gay·er, gay·est
    1. Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex.
    2. Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry.
    3. Bright or lively, especially in color: a gay, sunny room.
    4. Given to social pleasures.
    5. Dissolute; licentious.

    n.

    1. A person whose sexual orientation is to persons of the same sex.
    2. A man whose sexual orientation is to men: an alliance of gays and lesbians.

The word gay is now standard in its use to refer to homosexuals, in large part because it is the term that most gay people prefer in referring to themselves. Gay is distinguished from homosexual primarily by the emphasis it places on the cultural and social aspects of homosexuality as opposed to sexual practice. Many writers reserve gay for males, but the word is also used to refer to both sexes; when the intended meaning is not clear in the context, the phrase gay and lesbian may be used. Like the other names of social groups derived from adjectives (for example, Black), gay may be regarded as offensive when used as a noun to refer to particular individuals, as in There were two gays on the panel; here phrasing such as gay members should be used instead. But there is no objection to the use of the noun in the plural to refer collectively either to gay men or to gay men and lesbians, so long as it is clear whether men alone or both men and women are being discussed.

It covers everything from G to L to B in my opinion and people who just want to discuss general issues who are gay. Plus i think we should DROP the "issues"

Its nothing to me to change it... and since we've put a lot of effort into making boards Google friendly (we now have thousands of links from Google) it might be nice to have it link to here.

    DeV.

ps: Btw I now, unintentionally, have the number 1 google ranking for "I have gay hair". *sigh*.

I dont agree with dropping the "issues" as we set this board up NOT as a meeting place for gay people (we dont have a similar one for straights) but for addressing issues around homosexuality (such as coming out etc).
The fact that people meet for pints etc is overlooked by the admins (as it is for some of our friskier straight members :) ) but I DONT want this to turn into some sort of personals board as thats off-topic.

What do others think? Is there another word that could be used rather then Issues?

    DeV.

Back to the point of the thread I agree with changing the forum name
Er, on a more serious note, if it helps people to understand the purpose and nature of this board better by adhering to a naming convention, then yes, a name change would be in order.

On a less serious note there are LGB societies in certain colleges who are considering renamimg themselves (I might have got this wrong theres so many letters) LGBTTTQQCSF

    TTTQQCSF standing for

    Transgender
    Transsexual
    Transvestite
    Queer
    Questioning
    Confused
    Straight Friendly

    :p:D

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
