Hi all, this is my very first post and i'm a man in need of help. I've to do work placement in Dundalk for the summer starting in April. I'm from cork so obviously i don't know much about this area of the country.

i was wondering if anyone would be able to help me or offer some advice. would it be feasible for me to live in Dublin and commute to Dundalk every day by train or car(how long would this take?). Or would i be better off just living in dundalk. I'm at my wits end and would greatly appreciate any help you could give me.

I suppose it depends on where you are living in Dublin and where your job is in Dundalk.

    Train timetables are available here

Apart from that the train journey is between an hour and an hour and twenty minutes, depending on which train you get.

It seems a bit far (imagine going from the centre of Cork to Limerick or Waterford), rent is expensive in Dublin (unless you can stay with family). Of more importance to the time taken to travel by train, is the time it takes to get from and from the stations (at both ends) and what alternatives are there is there is no train (strike / cancellation / breakdown).

Compare costs of living in Dundalk (rent, bills, food) to costs of commuting from Dublin (rent, bills, food, travel, cost of living, lack of free time).

I live in Drogheda and work in Dublin 2, I get the train at 7.45am and get into the dart station beside work around an hour later (it takes about 45 mins coming home though).

There are LOADS of people on my train who commute from Dundalk. I don't really know how they do it, an hour is pushing it for me travel time wise, and unless you get the enterprise to Dundalk at 7.30pm (takes 45 mins to Dundalk), you're looking at 1 hr 30 mins to get to Dundalk if you get the 5.45pm train as I do.

I used to get the bus from Drogheda to Blanchardstown last year for a while and oh my god, I did NOTHING socially during the week because I was so wrecked and lethargic from sitting on the bus.

I'd definitely recommend moving to Dundalk if it's a full time job but seeing as this is just for the summer it should be ok, it's do-able, it'd be worse if it was the winter I think

Assuming you get up well before 7am to make sure you get the early train (assuming it isn't delayed) and that you finish work at 5:30pm, you wouldn't get home until close to 9pm. Is that a life?

Victor - it usually took me an hour just to get from O'Connell st to Blanchardstown and vice versa (8km), yet to get from Busaras to my house outside Drogheda...45-50 mins. Go figure. Commuting from town to Dundalk is comparable to commuting from, say, Tallaght to Blanchardstown on public transport.

You have to remember the guy is only going to be working in Dundalk for the summer!
