Sources of arcade cabinet bargains?

I've been looking at lots of sites involving MAME cabinets recently and the idea is appealing to me more and more. I'm not much of a carpenter so I don't imagine I can build one from scratch but I'd be happy to do the cosmetic touchups on an old cabinet.

Are there many arcade suppliers here in Ireland and where are they based? Should I just go down to my local pool hall and ask the staff where they get them from? I'm hoping there's a clean, reasonably modern cabinet with a bright monitor lying in some wearhouse somewhere that they want to get rid of. Buying online seems like such a waste considering the overpricing and the huge shipping costs.

Don't know how I missed this thread...No matter,as KdjaC has pointed out the yellow pages is were to look. The major players are based in Dundalk, Meath and Dublin but may well try to charge u an arm and a leg for a cabinet. Is there's any arcades near u or maybe ask in pubs etc if they want to sell. You'll get them for next to nothing. I'm also talking to a mate of mine (Who is a carpenter) who thinks he could build cabs no problem. I'll keep everyone who posts on this forum up to date on that one;)
If your going to talk to these guy's make sure you know what your on about
    1. What size cab?
    2. Do you want a coin mech for added realism?
    3. Will you be needing buttons etc? If it's a basic JAMMA setup ur buying ur going to need to add buttons for a MAME cab
    4. If your planning on using the original monitor make sure its in good nick with as little screen burn as possible
Expect to pay 200 max for a GOOD cabinet. The going rate is 50 to 150 for anything else.

Also expect to have a 1ghz pc under the hood no point in getting Emus and tonnes of roms when your PC stutters using MAME.

I live in Ennis in Clare and the pool hall here has 5 or 6 arcade machines with broken controls. There's a SCUD Racer with broken wheel, Time Crisis and HotD with ruined monitors and a Sega Megalo cab in pretty good condition. I love a Megalo but those things are fecking huge.

I'll have alook about the arcades in Lahinch and Kilkee in a few weeks. There are a couple of closed down ones there with machines still in them. Nothing dedicated thats valuable to collector nuts, just lots of standard JAMMA cabs.

Well if you notice a few heading for the dump I'll pay a few bob for a working cab. I'd also be willing to collect. You may well have come across a gold mine if the arcades have closed down. Some minor repairs could see you with a nice cab with it's original PCB. Arcade controls aren't very hard to fix but try and get a JAMMA+ cab it'll be the one housing SF2/MK2 etc Allows for six buttons for each player:)

I'm a Virtua Fighter and SNK nut so I'll be ordering some nice japanese sticks and buttons from Happ controls.

I also want to paint the thing clean white. I prefer the more modern Sega Naomi cab look to scruffy generic 80's ones. They look fine if you have a swish dedicated cab but the general ones would look horrible in a domestic situation.

I'll let you know what I see in Kilkee. As I said earlier most of the stuff in them is non-dedicated so not valuable to collectors. The only one that really stood out to me when I was there a few years ago was Sega HotRod. It's a 4 player cocktail dealie. Plays like Micro Machines with shortcuts and car upgrades. Not the best game in the world though so i don't know that anybody would be that excited about it.

Cheers i'd be most greatfull if you keep an eye. i'm not looking for anything special. cab art work don't interest me but a fairly generic JAMMA+ cab does:)

I had a look around Dublin - I met the Guy who owns Dr. Quirkeys and he wanted 150 Euro for 2 Crappy Cabs. I only want one, and I'd be willing to pay for the right one, but these 2 were really crappy.

Anybody else know of anywhere in Dublin where I might get one ?

Oh I'm not rushing into this. I don't have a car of my own at the moment so I won't be able to go out to the seaside for a while and I'm in between jobs so I've feck all money for a new PC to put in it. (Should get a 2nd hand 1 GHz from somewhere).

I'll post a topic with pics and info when I get something done.

I didn't have much luck at Lahinch.

I think I'll try Shannon Airport next. They have 10 or 15 clapped out old machine's with bad monitors sitting in a corner. I'm hoping they still have that old TNMT 4-player I remember for years ago.

I got a NeoGeo Machine on the Buy and Sell last wee for 300 Euro.

Fully working with 6 games (Neo Geo MVS)

I can sell the games and the 6 Slot MVS for well over 300 Euro on EBay and I'll use the cab for a MAME machine.

I'll probablly put a SlikStik on it (I'm working on an advertising deal with SlikStik on my SIte and I'll get it for free)
