Unix box as a dial up server

I am running Mandrake 8.1. As per the title, I am looking for the ability to dial into my machine remotely using bog standard modems on both ends.

I have spent the last three days trawling through hot-to's but they tend to assume a lot of prior knowledge, that I simply don't have.

I believe I need mgetty - which has six processes running from tty1 to tty6. Am I correct in assuming they are the imaginary COM ports that a modem is to be connected to? I have my modem connected to /dev/modem, which is pointing to /dev/stty0.

Also, what else do I need - bear in mind that security is not really a big deal, all I want for now is a simple telnet session. I have attempted to start the telnet daemon, but it keeps bombing out with the following:

    getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket

Is this due to the fact that I don't have an IP address assigned to my machine?

    Thanks,

    TD.
