Well how many of you out there believe in fate? Or do you think that a person makes his/her own destiny?

I think or kinda hope that I believe in it. That there is one person out there for you and only you - soulmates so to speak.

    So what do ye think?

no not at all, i dont believe in it like i dont believe in religion, that a person has a soul or that im well hung!...sorry im being serious tho i dont think we all have a set path to follow in life etc., but im not against the idea and if it allows people to get through the day happily like religion etc. does than leave em off.....its just not for me.

I believe that fate or destiny is both mapped out for you but you still have to find it or follow it yourself. I believe there is a special person for everybody and a time and place for everything. If I apply for a job and dont get it or a trip is cancelled, I just think that it was not meant to be and that there is something else out there for me.

Sometimes I do think that fate and destiny are mapped out for each of us and sometimes I dont. What has made me consider it more and more of late. What has made me consider it more and more of late is that given the amount of near misses I have had over the years, I should be dead or have at least some broken bones. Now that could be tempting fate, and she's not one to be messed with, but when you have spent a night sleeping on a surgical scalpel and woken up without a scratch it makes you wonder.

Also, I saw one of those "Miracle Escape" programmes a couple of months ago where a guy had walked from a crash landing in a jumbo and TEN days later walked from one of the British Rail crashes that killed people in the same cabin as he was. How do you explain shít like that other than fate?

I have a funny feeling somebody somewhere is going to come up with some set of quantum mechanics to disprove this fate business. And soon.

We believe we subconsciously create our own destinies. We act upon events without really thinking about them and call what results 'fate'.

I call it 'the little man in the back of my head'. For example, if I'm sitting having a drink in the bar and a girl walks in who I don't immediately fancy and have no intention of chatting up. If, say, I see her at the bar while getting a drink and talk to her politely, one thing leads to another, we get married and have children - is that my subconscious acting on my behalf to map out my/our fate?

Well, that's confused me, so I don't expect anyone else to understand it.

Is the capricious nature of fate a personal issue for you jonno? Or should this thread be better suited to the After Hours board?

Well I wasn't sure what board to put it on TBH. I thought that it might be personnal to some people and as for myself it is a personnal thing. Especially that I mentioned soul mates (because of late the idea has been spinning around in my head and driving me nuts). Maybe I labelled the thread badly but I was getting more at the issue of believing that everyone has a soulmate and if so do they believe fate would drag these two people together.

Sometimes I do think there are soulmates to be found yes. I think I have walked past most of mine.

I like to remake the Matrix as I see fit, it gives me a sense of parklife.

Ps. I don't read the tarrot either.

We create our own detinies, or others create it for us.. it was not mapped out in time before time... Who here can seriously believe we are pawns on a chess board and some God is moving the pieces??

Soulmates of course are a reality for many, people.

I don't think that is predestination (I'm not a Calvanist after all), I think it is a contingent, an element of human interpersonal relationships.*

i'd love the whole soulmates thing to be true, but i don't really believe in it deep down.

i think i believe that we make our own paths through life but i've had a couple of experiences that have contradicted that. one day when i was younger my mam was driving me and my brothers somewhere, and i couldn't find my tapshoes anywhere and spent a couple of minutes looking for them. we went outside to find our car had been smashed into a pole by a truck. if i hadn't have lost my shoes we'd have been sitting in it when it happened. freaky.

Soulmates are different.. very different from fate!!
A soulmate is someone who you feel is whats missing from your life. Without them you are incomplete. They are usually someone who is so perfectly matched personality wise that they could almost be you.. or in some cases be very different but posess the quialities you yourself lack.

Fate is different... does not exist. A soulmate does because if the number of people in the world. Its very likely there is a soulmate for almsost everyone. However few find them.

On that note of levity... I'd like to encourage everybody to vote.

Yes I believe in soulmates and in love.......

Which is strange... because I used to be such a bastard to women. I suppose my recent (read last five years) of bad luck on that front is karma*

I dont believe in soul mates, I don't think there's such a thing as predestination- which to me is what soulmates implies, that your destined/fated for one particular person.

Although I have to say I have met some couples who get on so well that its made me think, perhaps...

so they are and after being lucky enough to find my own [if you knew the story you think twas lucky!] I can say yaa..soulmates DO exist.

As for fate..well..something brought my g/f and I together why not fate?

i used to believe in soulmates, then i realised that there cant be one person out there that you are meant to be with, because peoples opinions of people, thier views, and thier tastes are constantly changing, even the happiest married of couples can find something about thier partners they dislike, it might be a small think and it might make no difference to the outwardly 'perfect couple' but it exists, no two people are meant to be together, and if you have a fate, and everything is planned out, then i personally think that eliminates risk, and want, and without risk and want, is there really a point in life?

Despite being a misanthrope I do believe in soulmates and believe that there are people out there who were made "just for you" as they say. In fact I have met and even gone out with several of them. All had had big tits by some bizarre coincidence.

I think the decisions we make every day form our lives, I don't think I'm just going through the motions of some pre-arranged life.

No, I don't think there is such a thing as one single soul mate. There are billions of people in the world, logic dictates that some of them will satisfy everything I require of a partner and visa versa.

    :)
