"we will have a fuel cell on the market in the next few years" - how many times have I heard that...

    More Info on the technology:
    http://www.fuelcelltoday.com/FuelCellToday/EducationCentre/EducationCentreExternal/EduCentreDisplay/0,1748,FAQsHome,00.htm

"In 1959 Bacon demonstrated a machine capable of producing 5 kW of power," ... "Technical breakthroughs during the decade included the launch of the first fuel cell-powered vehicle in 1993 by the Canadian company Ballard."

Note: Methanol / Ethanonl / Hydrogen are probably less dangerous then petrol in a car crash (However, bio diesel does not explode - BTW: to be fair the Hindenberg was not a Hydrogen fire - the ship was covered in thermite !)

Most DIY fuel cells run on Hydrogen one place to buy them:

(they also do solar panels etc.)

One way of making hydrogen is to make a battery from a steel electrode , a sacraficial electrode of scrap aluminium, sodium hydroxide as the electrolyte. As the aluminium gets consumed Hydrogen is given off too (and you get electricity but only at about 0.4 Volts)

On second thoughts - just power your laptop from caustic soda and the thinfoil from your sandwiches... :)
