Does anyone know theire tv licence laws? if I have a Video and a projector, do i need a tvlicence. I realise it might be a stupid question but i Was wondering if it was a loophole. i have a Sony VPL-HS2 and it kicks thew ass off my old 20" . DVD's are on it are better than going to any cinema.

If the Video player has a built in tuner as most have you do need a TV licence if however you are using a DVD player and projector you will not need a licence provided neither has a tuner built in or attached. Just be careful I know someone who was done for a TV aerial on the roof despite genuinely not having a TV at the time it didn't matter as the law refers to any device or apparatus capable or recieving TV transmissions and he lost in court on that basis.

that's a bit harsh. i have used clothes hangers, even my finger once to receive terrestrial reception

God, that was indeed very harsh considering he had no way of making use of the aerial! On that concept, it would be possible to be liable if you only have a pair of "rabbits ears" lying around...

You must have very bad local cinema :-)

(I prefer Films at home to cinema).

I saw a letter alleged to come from UK licence agreeing that if it could be proved the viewer only had foriegn TV (i.e. Only German or Bulgarian), then they did not have to pay UK licence.

    I'm sceptical.

I'm also not about to see if that applies in Ireland..

"Yes I know there are 4 dishes, 8 lnbs and 5 satellite receivers driving the 6 TV sets, but we don't watch any Irish TV..."

"The aerials on the roof?" -- "Those are for our TV transmitter. Look I paid my 10Euro licence for that!"

(Seriously a licence to Transmit and receive "Amatuer RAdio & TV", An Experimentors Licence (Ham in USA) is only 10 Euro a year)

The law on TV licencing in ireland is totally different to the UK

In ireland the law is based on "possesion of equipment DESIGNED for recieving and exibiting images from a broadcasting station" (regardless of where the station is)

What you use the thing for is completly irrelevent

But needing a licence for an aerial is a load of ******** you can always claim the aerial is for FM radio. Yes I know hardly anyone in Ireland uses an outdoor aerial for FM but in most places it usially is worth is (avoid those circular "halo" things though) especially if youre listening on good HiFi.

In the UK you are allowed to have an unlicenced set if you can prove its only capable of recieving TV from outside the UK. Ive been trying to get clarification from TVLa whether this means I could legally have a TV in Northern ireland with just an RTE aerial but they seem reluctant to reply (given the 30% rate of licence evasion here its understandable)

    Only 30%?
I left NI in 1983. I think it was running about 50% in Belfast then.

My €10 "experimenter licence" (Radio Amatuer) allows me to Transmit and Receive TV as well as Radio. Maybe I don't need to renew the ordinary TV licence next year ? :D

Well on the way into one estate near here theres a warinng that "TV licence men will be executed" !

And Ive heard loads of stories of inspectors getting death threats (in one instance they vere stripped naked stuck down a manhole and their van was burned out)

The licence is needed if you have the means of receiving radio as well

A spoon is capable of "receiving" both TV and radio transmissions.
