Nerves

This is a theatre board, so I thought I'd post it here, and see what (if any) replies it got. If there are any other actors-professional or amateur- out there, my question is-how nervous do you get before a performance, and how do you control your nervousness? I've been involved in theatre groups for YEARS (amateur-would LOVE to go pro, but not confident I'd do well!) and I get nervous-not crippingly so- before EVERY show. Anybody out there who DOSEN'T suffer from pre-show nerves (although I don't think such a person exists?)

youre right, everyone gets nerves. even the most professional performers i know agree that the are inescapable. but i must say that i think those sickly butterflies that cartwheel about in our guts before a show are key to an actor's performance. all that nervous energy that fizzes up to the point of implosion is, within moments of actually stepping out on stage/set, transmuted into an altogether different form of energy, a performative energy that can give a role powerful electricity. one just has to channel it.

I did a show with a group this morning. On the bus going to the venue, I was quite quiet and pretty nervous, but when I got there, I took a few minutes after warm-up, and paced up and down, getting really pumped up, telling myself that yes, I was nervous, but I've done this before (loads of times!!) and I was going to ENJOY myself. And when it came to the time to do it, I felt confident, relaxed, and enjoyed myself THOROUGHLY- and, performance-wise, I think that it was the best performance I've given in a few years!!!!

I've changed the subject of the thread from "Ner" to "Nerves". Makes more sense.

i used to get nerves pretty bad. i think i get nerves worse when im in the chorus more so than when i have a solo part for some reason. im not too bad nowadays though. the thing that really scares me is forgetting words, usually if im singing it's not too bad but if im in a speaking bit i'd probably blank and wouldnt be able to ad lib, whereas ive ad libbed singing lines a few times.
