BEWARE: Nokia HDD-1 Headset for 8210/8310/8850/8890

I had the poor judgement yesterday to buy a brand new branded Nokia headset for my 8210. The model in question is the HDD-1, a dual headset thingy (i.e. 2 ear pieces) with the microphone integrated into the clip which also can hold the earpieces. It cost EUR 25 too, so there was a certain level of expectation.

The first problem: I prefer to not use the pads for the earpieces, and have never done so with Nokia headsets. Big mistake - there were bits of plastic left over from the injection moulding process which didn't exactly make this a pleasant experience.
Okay, so then go to put on the foam covers, gently does it, rrriiipppp, hmm, not gong to happen. I filed down the excess plastic with my nails then, and can now comfortably use the earpieces without the foam covers.

    Second problem:
Audio quality is lousy, terrible, rendering the unit next to useless. This is for two reasons: distortion/crackle of lower frequencies and extremely low volume, even with the phone at full volume setting. Maybe this is to be expected with splitting the power over two earpieces over one, but why is this unit recommended for the 8210 which probably wan't specced for a twin headset...

In fact, walking from the shop (in a moderately busy shopping mall) with medium level of background noise, I dialled 171 which is usually nice and clear only to struggle to hear the guide voice and messages.

My advice to proposective buyers out there - think twice. I can hardly believe that a Nokia branded unit could be so pathethic, I've had bad experiences with BrandX units but they seemed good in comparison.

It's going back to the shop today - I'd better get a refund otherwise I'm not going to be happy.

are you sure its not your fone? have you tried it on other phones? because thats the first thing they are gonna say to you?
Also they are normally very good, they serve as real earphones for the radio on the 8310/6510?

The 8210 is fine - still works fine with an old headset with a dodgy microphone. Ath this stage I'm fairly convinced that the (or at least my) 8210 isn't capable of driving the two ear pieces with sufficient power to be able to hear it properly...
