Hello...I've got the Nokia 6310 and I'm trying to connect to the internet via GRPS on Vodafone. I downloaded the Connect Me software for the Vodafone website and it seems to work grand - but I'm getting a "Subscribe to GPRS first" I'm not sure how to subscribe exactly, since I'm using a prepaid SIM I didn't think you'd have to subscribe...

Just as a side note I thought GPRS was an "always -on" service yet vodafone seem to charge 20c for every time you connect, this seems kinda defeating the purpose of GPRS to me. Although with the ridiculous price of 2c per 1 kb I won't be using it that often.

    Hi,

Subscribe to GPRS first" means that the GPRS service is not activated on your account; a quick phone call to Vodafone should sort that out.

As for ''Always On'' - I say my arse. I've never seen a GPRS connection last more than 10 to 20 minutes after you stop using it. I'd love someone from Vodafone show me Alway's On actually stay on.

To be honest, I find that WAP using dialup is cheaper, especially if you're downloading ringtones and games over WAP.
As for connecting to the internet. I wouldn't even consider using GPRS - The GPRS prices were designed with WAP in mind not internet access - use the High speed data option on your phone instead - it's quicker than GPRS, although not by much.

BTW, you'll have to get High Speed Data (HSCSD) activated on your account as well, so mention that when you ring them.

    V10 ;)

you mentioned the ConnectMe software (for a Laptop/PDA), i've asked them about getting GPRS internet (WEB access not WAP) set-up on the RTG SIM a couple of times and been told it's wasn't available to ReadyToGo customers (at that stage) only bill customers, if you do get it set-up can you post back

direct your call to their data support team not the Live! team. the data support deal with the WEB side of things, Live! support seem to be focused on WAP and MMS (anytime i've called)

using the Vodafone 'pay as you use' for anything more than WAP is going to dent your pocket, even for bill-pay customers with the package deal for or very light use of email/pda friendy sites is very expensive - GPRS charges with Vodafone are currently a multiple of the cost of O2

there was a rumbelling of a GPRS pricing / package revision for Vodafone Irealnd in an ENN Article recently (that reported on T-Mobile US cutting their charges to spur data usage)

also as you point out Vodafone Ireland have a minimum usage per connection (10KB) - i've noticed this eating away at the tiny 1MB inclusive allocation for the BillPay SIM if checking for new mail during the day, O2 Ireland don't do this.

for the 'always-on' situation, the T68i has been pretty impressive maintaining a connection for hours and the 7650 isn't bad either, did have trouble on teh 6310 though especially when being used as a modem for the Laptop/PDA

    Thanks a lot guys.

DubWireless - Yeh I can connect via GPRS when I use the 6310 for WAP, but not through the "Connect Me" software on the laptop. I'm guessing it's still not set up for RTG (which as you said is a good thing for my wallet:) )

Well it's certainly needed. If only they realised that reducing the price wouldn't make us spend less, it would make us use it more. So they'd still get the same money from me, probably more actually if I thought it was good value i.e. instead thinking "No no can't use GPRS it's way too expensive" I'd be thinkg "Hmm I'll use GPRS for a little while" and invariably use it for quite a while.

    Thanks for the help anyway
