    Taken from:

This data is whacked when compared to itself.

    For example:

2% have never heard of PC's (Personal Computers).... but only 1% have never heard of the Internet.

That leaves at least 1% of the respondants who HAVE heard of the internet but who HAVENT heard of PC's?

What do these people think it runs on? Toasters?

    --

71% have access to the web from somewhere but 50% havent heard of broadband internet? thats at leaast 21% who use the web but dont realise that it could be faster.... that number reaches 50% if you were to talk about "bandwidth" rather then "broadband internet"

    --

3% have never heard of email... given that only 2% had never heard of computers and only 1% hadnt heard of the net... that leaves at least 1% or respondants who has heard about computers and the net without ever hearing about email. That may not seem like much but in country of 3Million thats 30,000 people. Boggle.

Some of this stuff makes for very interesting reading...

Well, in a recent episode of the Simpsons, Homer was overheard to say "Coo - you can get the Internet on computers now"

So maybe not enough people watch the Simpsons? :)

To be honest I'm not too surprised by some of those. Alot of old fogies would probably have heard the word "Internet" on the news, radio or whatever, but never actually knew wtf is was. Or cared for that matter.

Ignoramuses! They should be marching down O'Connell St. with placards and banners, it's not as if they've anything better to do!

There will always be 1% who are going to give odd answers. These will be people who have read about the Internet in the paper but don't know anything about computers.
What do these people think it runs on? Toasters?
Again these are just 1% giving dumb answers.

Yes. Most people aren't technical in that sense. Remember, there has been next to no advertising of broadband since the product don't to any extent exist.

Yes, but you are always going to get these anomolies among a small percentage of the population.

Some interesting little bits in there.

Most of the people who don't want to get the Internet at home (rejectors) also consider themselves very uncomfortable/uneasy with the net. Very few are happy with using it, but just not interested. It seems that most people who aren't interested are so because they're uncomfortable with the technology. Interesting. :)

Another anomalous stat - 1% of all 'potentials' have tried the Internet at home. But wait - Aren't potentials the people who don't have the net at home?:)

More proof too that Irish people clock watch. There's a hard core of people who spend between 10-30 minutes online. Then another sudden hard core who spend an hour. Indicators that people set a certain amount of time to stay online, and then log off...why? To keep control of costs methinks :)

Think more people might understand as in an episode of fair city this week one of the old fogies was seen being given and introduction to the internet.

(Not that I was watching it or anything)

You are going to get small numbers of any population giving funny answers.

It is the big numbers that are important.

    Look at the big numbers:

Ownersip of PC at home: 62%
Internet access at home: 49% (this is a fairly good figure).

Of the remaining 51%, 54% of these were fairly interested or above in getting it in the future.

"I find the Internet Boring and pointless" 73% disagree.

And a number of other indications that suggest that people have fairly positive attitutes towards the internet.

The only strange thing is the low usage among those have internet access. Why is that?

The answer is probably on page 41, where 47% expressed interest in unmetered packages (not necessarilly broadband).

What I'm seeing from this, is that Ireland is essentially no different than other countries.

It is a very different story when you look at the telcos. From day one these have sought to marginalise those who have wanted flat rate and broadband.

Listen to Soula Evens at the IOFFL seminar here.

Well, he deals in antiques and we deal with antiquated internet access. That is probably why he was chosen by the ODTR to give the presentation.
