While not quite a chick-flick, I'm sure the ladies will appreciate the sight of George Clooney's butt in Solaris.

The film was billing itself as the best thing in special effects in years, which I disagree with. There is very little CGI. It is stylish and the set is very good and could win a style award, but it isn't a new Star Wars or LOTR, effects wise.

They did two diff trailers, one to make it look like a chick flick the other for the scifi geeks. I never got the impression it was meant to be an fx showpiece though. I thought with Soderbergh it was going to be stylish with a good atmosphere and sfa fx. Thought this was him trying to do 2001

First one sent me to sleep so I'm deffo not seeing this. Although the first one didn't have english subtitles so i was forced to keep asking my girlfriend - "what's happening?", "where is he again?", "is he on a planet or is he in his house?".

There's something to be said for watching a film when you don't understand the language. That something is.. BORING!

I liked it a lot, didnt think it was a chick flick at all. I think
    The film was billing itself
was the biggest issue - Solaris was marketed terribly by the studio, who thought it was going to bomb so decided to remarket it as a chick flick and try to make some money back on it. Hence the people who went to see it were the wrong audience, didnt get what they ordered and came back with a misled verdict that it was awful.

Having said that, I can understand how it wouldnt appeal to a lot of people, but I personally liked it.

Christ, what a dull film. usually i love Soderburgh, but this was just pure tosh. The only thing good is that it wasnt half as boring as the four hour russian version.

Having seen in yesterday I can understand why in bombed in the states. It is one of these films you have to think about. There is next to no action. Therefore not space opera fare at all. That plus it jumps about timewise a lot (which had I not been sugar charged may have caused confusion).

The effects are excellent though. Particully liked the way Solaris looked through the windows on the spacestation.

One of the better real science fiction films to come out in my view.

This is probably because it was only half as long?!

Seriously though I really enjoyed it. It questioned the nature of the self and one's surroundings, which is what nearly all quality sci-fi does. Bladerunner, 2001 , Dark City, Avalon, The Matrix etc..
