    The s/z schism originates from a disagreement between the universities of Oxford (prefers Z) and Cambridge (prefers S).
    The Cambridge standard is more widesprad in British English, and the Oxford standard is mostly used in America.
    Just like for "soccer", it's not the US's "fault" for spelling things "wrongly" or making up words.

    Whereas it was the Americans who introduced spellings such as -or instead of -our (color -> colour) and -er instead of -re (center -> centre). Noah Webster, as in Webster's dictionary, was one of the principal founders/advocates of the spelling "reforms", as far as I remember.
