Nearly 540,000 households in Japan signed up for broadband Internet service in January, bringing the country’s total broadband subscribers to 8.344 million households, reported the Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun, citing statistics from Japan’s Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications.

Depressing, I thought the Japanesse where supposed to be quiet slow on the take up of net access, it looks like the net has taken off big time over there.

Its growing everywhere from what I have read. AOL/MSN/Netzero etc have all lost dialup users with them moving to highspeed connections. Good thing for these companies is that they knew this was going to happen and offer the high speed services.

This is happening now but reports and such a few months ago were saying ppl werent taking up the high speed services. In some many cases surveys seem to distort the true and ever changing customer opinion regarding such products.

The product needed time to build customer confidence and word of mouth helps and seems to be the case here anyways. As people hear nothing but good reports and see that most services on the web now require high speed connections they make the change and when there isnt a huge upgrade fee people are even encouraged more. Most of the main providers here install for free and give a few months free to get customer to make the change and dont forget there is lots of competition!

Well considering 12mb adsl (at just under €20, from yahoo and ntt anyway) seems to be the standard for home internet access in Japan, it's understandable that they have a much bigger takeup than here with our book-the-telegraph-poles-in-advance style internet access availability/affordability. :)

I think that there are a few reasons why the Japanese are moving to broadband in such huge numbers. (I'm in the process of moving to Tokyo from Dublin and these are based on personal observations)

-lots of them own computers at home and computers are part of the culture there (like Ham Baps are part of the culture in Ireland)

-hard core pornography is not legal to purchase therefore must be found on the internet

-competition has forced prices down to affordable levels - lots of differnet companies offer ADSL over ntt lines.

-marketing is huge at the moment with lots of people handing out ADSL kits in the streets (Yahoo Broadband people with their little white raincoats and boxes with modems)

-The government doesn't like falling behind Korea - so its a bit of a pride issue (unlike Bertie's complete indifference to falling behind the UK)

Just my two cents after being there for a couple weeks and looking for an apartment....BTW, my new apartment in Roppongi has fibre to the building and a LAN connection in every room. SWEET.
