I decided to take a chance on this as the guys in my league are raving about it.
I have all Papyrus sims including Nascar4 and Nascar 2003.
I thought they couldnt improve on 2003!
BOY was i wrong! Its a giant step for all SIMkind.
They have only gone and improved on the already best and legendary physics out there.
The graphics are absolutely gorgeous, the way debris from cars in front whether its tyre rubber, oil, smoke from locked brakes ,it builds and builds on your windscreen .Add to this the fact that the already incredible netcode has been improved upon, well this is one incredible piece of software.
I had a great race lastnight on a Texan server with my ISDN connection and 30 competitors .
54 laps later 2 pitstops and zero lag i crossed the finish in 12th place 5 seconds behind the winner. For the 54 laps we were door to door ,bumper to bumper at 190 mph.
Nothing compares to this sort of racing action.
If you already have 2002 go get 2003 its way better .

    sounds good.

Any idea if it is playable on 56k?

Or are any racing sims playable at that speed??

Hi Bullman ,up until December i was on 56k for 5 years.
All Papyrus sims are superb even on 56k.
The past 3 years i have played 3 seasons in my Grand prix legends league[ GPL is a Papyrus sim too] on UK servers and with 56k.
Last year i completed the TRM Nascar league ,which also is a UK league on 56k.
Trust me if your isp is decent any Papyrus sim is very playable on 56k .They are known for their great netcode almost as much as THE BEST physics.
With a price tag of 34.99 euros its an absolute bargain.
Ask any veteran simracer what are the best racing games about on any system and ill bet my house they say either Nascar4,Nascar 2002,Nascar 2003 or Grand Prix Legends all from Papyrus.
Do yourself a favour , pick up a copy now!

most likely shall be picking it up on friday. but until i get a new machine to play it on i will have to withhold judgment.

Is there much emphisis on car setup in nascar. I have GPL, but it is a little messy to get into. The car just seems to handle crap.

Would the nascar series provide a more newbie friendly environment?

Chances are that I will pick up that copy now, but I want to make sure that I will be playing it first. Do you work for Papyrus by the way?!?

nope just the papyrus fanboy squad that lurks around these parts.

nascar is much easier to pick up and play than gpl but its just as hard to be fast. car setup is mindbogglingly difficult without some knowledge of nascar racing itself but there are some good default setups included with earlier versions of the game so i would imagine 2003 is no different.

there is nothing quite like going for 60(normal humans wouldnt last a full race) odd laps bumper to bumper with 41 other cars at 180mph. bring a change of underpants.

LOL no i dont work for papy but 6 years experience of simracing does help.
There are lots of great setups you can download from real Nascar drivers even.Yes Dale Earnheardt jnr regularly plays it online .
If you want to try out your own setups in the garage just hover your mouse over the different setup options and you will be greeted with detailed explanations of this particular option .

Go to some of the great sites on the web for endless information.

    www.nascarnet.com

    www. sportplanet.com/team-lightspeed/

    www.pedaltothemetal.co.uk

The last one is for my league,
just a couple i can think of off the top of my head.

    Dcully, sounds good

Is there any annoying cheats in online games?

Do you have a strearing wheel?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Hi 13rian , no theres no cheats for online racing games , in nascar 2002 and 2003 there is a ranking system which tracks ur performance and gives ranks accordingly.
If u intentionally wreck someone this is recorded too .
This allows a host to filter out would be wreckers .
Yes i have a wheel ,i posted a picture of it here on this board in a thread called "post your racing setup here".Its force feedback of course, have a look.
Do yourself a favour pick up a copy of Nascar 2003,Grand prix legends and F1 2002 [loads of great mods for it] and a wheel setup. If you are remotely interested in racing on your pc you will love these sims.

i like the idea of no cheaters, makes real competition possible, i played age of empires 2 : tc on zone for a long time and liked the rating system and no cheats, which as you says nascar has too

i checked out your setup, its impressive

i think i might get nascar2003 some time, and join you for a few speed larks

    It has just arrived today.

I have had a look at the training videos and all I can say is wow.

It is far more detailed than I thought it would have been, both in graphics and in the amount of setup that is possible.

Time to plug in the wheel and give it a blast I suppose :)
