Not sure if this is the correct forum.

I'm on 087 and tried the free SMS service on Ocean for a while, but it stopped working. However since then I keep getting txt ads from IOL. Does anyone have a clue how I can opt out of this? Theres no contact info on their website. Its getting annoying now.

Forget it I found the answer.

The data protection act will sort that problem out for you. Just send them a letter saying you wnt to be removed from their list.

Not sure about this bit though, can you get them into trouble cos they kept and used your number for ads without your consent?

There has been a marked increase in SMS marketing in recent months as 'Free SMS' companies begin to reep the rewards of their msisdn harvesting.

In response to complaints by puzzled recipients, I posted this, some time ago.

I'm an 087 bill customer, and I once recieved an sms from some ringtone/logo company. I immediately called vodafone customer care and bitched & moaned as much as I could, and the guy at the other end said that I wouldn't recieve any more of that. :)

One of the ads I had was for a competition for a car. What I didn't realise till I checked the T&C's was that sending a txt to enter the competition would cost €2. That stung I can tell you. So I've unsubscribed. It will be interesting to see if I get any more ads over the next month or so.

If you just ring up IOL support and ask to be taken off, they'll remove you from the marketing list, I had myself removed in November and haven't had a single ad since, so it does work :)

Oh and, all those sms competition entries starting with 5 (I think?) charge an arm and a leg...come on, you didn't think it was really going to cost you 8c to enter a competition? ;P

In the case of premium rare SMS, you can lodge a complaint with RegTel if they have failed to follow the accepted Code of Practice.

The shortcodes are all 5-digits long and begin with 5, with the second digit denoting the rate - from '0' (Free) to '9' (€2 - Adult).

Still, €2 seems a bit pricy for an SMS competition. I only charge 60 cent ;)

I thought it would be about 50 cent or so. But €2, thats a bit much no? That siad it is for a car but the SMS itself should have quote the price not just the T&C on the website. I mean not everyone has web access do they?

If so, you may have grounds for a complaint to RegTel in view of a breach of section 5.3.1 of the Code of Practices in that it may be seen as promotional material which is likely to mislead by omission. RegTel will be able to advise you on this.

I've queried it with them. Be interesting to see what they say.
